👉 Eliminate filler words Insert a pause instead of filler words like “um,” “uh,” “right” that distract from and dilute your message. Consider what your thinking words are. 👉 Ensure you have clear pronunciation. This might feel weird at first, like over-annunciating but it works. Ensure no words are swallowed. 👉 Slow down when needed Talking too fast for too long can reveal rushed speaking or even nerves. Learn how and when to take your time. 👉 Ensure your voice is clearly audible and heard You don’t want volume to get in the way of people understanding you and your message. 👉 Answer concisely. Summarizing an explanation with numbers and using the psychological power of 3 is major. “Here are 3 things to consider when thinking about this.” #speaking #pronunciation #publicspeakingtips

Not every speaking tip needs to be a complex strategy you have to rehearse ;) Here are 3 ridiculously simple speaker hacks that work for everyone—from PhD candidates to executives: Water Break = Tactical Pause: Bring a water bottle to subtly buy yourself a few extra seconds when facing tough questions. Sip, think, respond. 💧 Incorporate Joy = Add something that makes you happy—a story, a pic of your dog, or even Geni Whitehouse’s basset hounds. When you enjoy it, so will your audience! This taps into emotional contagion—where your emotions actually spread to those around you. So, if you’re excited, they’ll feel it too! 🐶 Face it until you make it = Ever heard of embodied cognition? Your posture and expressions influence how you feel. Stand confident, channel positive energy, and let your body show your brain that you're in control. 😄 What’s your go-to super easy speaker hack? 😉

Y'all... Ya All... I received my Theatre of Public Speaking certificate. What does that mean? It means that I took a pretty intense 6-week public speaking course with two of the brightest public speaking ladies that I've ever had the honor of meeting - Misty Schachtell and Krista Marina A.. It also means that I submitted a presentation to be reviewed and judged by a panel of Keynote Speakers and Event Producers. ...and I received a passing score. (Whew, by the way) This class was an excellent study into getting into your audience's head (whether its public speaking or public accounting) and finding a way to authentically reach them. (did you know that humans aren't the biggest fans of just sitting and listening to someone talk and talk and talk and talk?) I am so grateful that I had the opportunity to take it and appreciate everything I learned and the friendships that I made.

I’m proud to share that I recently became a Theatre of Public Speaking Board Certified Speaker!! This was no easy feat! In addition to extensive coursework, I had to prepare for and pass a presentation test evaluated by a panel of top keynote speakers and speaker agents. Here’s the thing - I wasn’t sure I needed this program. But I did. I really did. For those who don’t know me well, I grew up on the stage. I went through a performing arts program in high school, earned a big scholarship to compete in college speech team (yes, that’s a thing), I have a degree in Theatre Performance, and I’ve been an active member/ leader in Toastmasters for years. I’m also very fortunate that my career has offered me amazing opportunities to speak and teach. I tell you all this to say that it all matters very little on paper unless I practice my craft and continue to challenge myself to grow. I have to keep finding the drive and courage to get up there and actually use the skills. Figure out what I want to say, write the speeches, develop them, memorize them, practice them, refine them, feel them in my bones, and move past the fears (yes- it is still quite scary after all these years). I thought about airplanes when I decided to join my ToPS cohort. You see, airplanes start to fall apart if they sit idle and without routine maintenance. At times, that is how I’ve felt about public speaking. When I don’t do it often enough and don’t commit myself to it - I start to rust. When I get in my own head and allow anxieties to take over, my engine can seize up and it doesn’t feel safe to leave the ground. Can you relate? I was feeling like an engine in need of a pro tune up. So this year, I decided to recommit to my goals and add more education to my speaker journey. And I’m so grateful that Misty Schachtell , Krista Marina A., and the ToPS community they’ve built were there for me when I did. This program challenged me and helped me think differently, and I experienced things I have not come across before in other programs or classes. I’ve been inspired to incorporate new techniques, take risks, and go deeper. Misty’s unique coaching style and the ToPS community gave me renewed confidence in my abilities. Empowered by all of this, I gave my first big keynote this summer. Ta- Da! What’s more, it brought a bunch of wonderful and unexpected friendships into my life. There’s magic in spending time in the company of others working toward similar goals, and being surrounded by folks rooting for each other in all the ways. My biggest advice to speakers is to be in community with other speakers - it makes a world of difference. I’m grateful for this recognition, for every step of the process, and that I get to continue to work on my craft with these exceptional women.💗 #UnmuteYourself #TheatreOfPublicSpeaking

Thriving behind the keyboard doesn't mean you thrive in front of people. You can get thousands or even millions of followers but ... Also feel overwhelmed during in-person networking events. And that's okay. Be sure to reach out to Ashley Francis, CPA/PFS online and check out her full interview and find out how she is at conferences, but also how she has been able to get up on the stage from Misty Schachtell at Theatre of Public Speaking. 🏫 Check out the full interview at Accounting High wherever you find your podcasts! 🎤 ⬇️ Check the comments below for links ⬇️ #Shoperations #AccountingHigh #Accounting #Podcast #ShopClass #FirmOperations #SystemsAndProcesses #SocialMedia #HumanInteraction #OnlinePresence #DigitalPersonas #Followers #SocialSkills #Networking #Communication #SocialAnxiety #InternetFame #KeyboardCourage #RealLifeEvents #SocialNetworks #TwitterSuccess #OfflineChallenges #InteractionSkills #PersonalBranding #SocialDynamics #DigitalAge #PublicEvents

Today, on what would have been Ursula K. Le Guin’s birthday 🎂, we celebrate the transformative power of women’s voices. Ursula K. Le Guin (1929-2018) was a renowned American author known for her works of speculative fiction, including the Earthsea series and the Hainish Cycle. Her writing often explored themes of gender, society, and human nature, challenging conventional norms and offering profound insights. 💡 This quote by Ursula K. Le Guin beautifully captures the essence of how powerful and transformative women’s voices can be.🎤 When women share their experiences and truths, it has the potential to change perspectives and create new possibilities, much like how a volcanic eruption reshapes the landscape.🌋 At @TheatreOfPublicSpeaking, we emphasize the importance of authentic expression and the impact it can have on audiences. Share your favorite quote below about truth and empowerment ⬇️ #PublicSpeaking #UrsulaKLeGuin #Speakingyourtruth #ownyourvoice

So proud of our alumna Nesha Pai, CPA in every way!! We love you 💕
My heart is full! I had an amazing time at the AICPA Diversity Symposium + Accounting Scholars Workshop in Atlanta. The panel I was on, alongside Keila Hill-Trawick, CPA, MBA, moderated by Raymond Williams ignited great discussion on entrepreneurship within the accounting profession. The students that attended are of the best and brightest around the country and our fellow professional attendees and speakers are a wealth of knowledge in the DEI space. Crystal Cooke and her crew nailed the entire programming!
