About us
MISSION STATEMENT The Bass, Miami Beach’s contemporary art museum, creates connections between international contemporary art and the museum’s diverse audiences. The Bass shares the power of contemporary art through experiences that excite, challenge and educate. ABOUT THE BASS The Bass is Miami Beach’s contemporary art museum. Focusing on exhibitions of international contemporary art, The Bass presents mid-career and established artists reflecting the spirit and international character of Miami Beach. The Bass seeks to expand the interpretation of contemporary art by incorporating disciplines of contemporary culture, such as design, fashion and architecture, into the exhibition program. Recognized for organizing the first solo museum exhibitions in the United States of international artists such as Erwin Wurm, The Bass also presents major exhibitions by influential artists such as El Anatsui, Isaac Julien, Eve Sussman, and Piotr Uklański. The exhibition program encompasses a wide range of media and artistic points of view that bring new thought to the diverse cultural context of Miami Beach. Central to the museum’s mission, The Bass maintains a vigorous education program for lifelong learning and visitors of all ages. The Bass IDEAS education initiative uses art as a catalyst for creativity and positive growth, especially in the area of early childhood education. The active outreach program, Creativity in the Community, takes The Bass IDEAS off-site by engaging families and their children in Miami-Dade County neighborhoods with the most challenged access to art.

The Bass is excited to announce Claudia Mattos as its new Associate Curator of New Media Art! In this new role, Claudia will assist with organizing contemporary art exhibitions, commissioned projects, rotations of the permanent collection, installations of public sculpture and associated programming. She arrives at an exciting moment as the museum begins to place increased focus on art and technology through its Knight New Media Art Initiatives. Claudia will conduct research on artists participating in exhibitions, works of art in the museum’s collection and artwork under consideration for acquisition, as well as serve as an important partner in the plan to make more accessible the museum’s contemporary permanent collection with the use of digital technologies. Claudia has previously held positions at The Baltimore Museum of Art and Locust Projects, Miami, among other institutions and galleries. In 2022, she was a Researcher-in-Residence at the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Seoul, South Korea. Claudia earned her MA in Art History from The Courtauld Institute of Art, London; and a BA in Art History from Cornell University, Ithaca, NY.

The Bass is a proud recipient of $400,000 in grant funds from Art Bridges Foundation Access for All pilot program. Over the course of three years, these funds will support extended museum hours, free admission, free public programs and free community wide events at the museum. The Art Bridges Access for All pilot program is a new $40 million, three-year funding initiative that aims to increase access to museums while fostering engagement with local audiences. The initiative provides support to 64 museum partners across the nation by covering the costs of admission, programming, marketing, outreach and additional efforts that reduce barriers to museum access.
