When we gather, great things happen! Last week, the EducationSuperHighway team met in Charlotte, North Carolina for our biannual staff retreat for some much-needed in-person collaboration and fun. Our time together focused on leaning into our winning stakeholder engagement strategies, reinforcing the values that drive our work, and building an even stronger connection to our mission to close the #broadband affordability gap. From dynamic strategy sessions to hands-on team-building exercises, and lively group dinners, each moment underscored the commitment and creativity of our small but mighty team. A special highlight was connecting with Bruce Clark and our partners at the Center for Digital Equity on the beautiful campus of Queens University. Together, we explored new ways to effectively communicate with community members across the #digitalequity spectrum. I'm grateful for an inspiring retreat and motivated for the work ahead. #DigitalEquity #TeamBuilding #StrategicPlanning #EducationSuperHighway

On Friday, part of the Program Management team at the School of Professional Studies assisted the Center for Digital Equity in preparing iPads for disaster relief efforts in Western North Carolina. These devices will enable residents still recovering from the devastating effects of Hurricane Helene to access FEMA and other critical services. Grateful to contribute to this important initiative supporting those in need.

The Center for Digital Equity hosts a quarterly laptop distribution for the residents of Mecklenburg County. The latest event was held during Digital Inclusion Week. What is Digital Inclusion Week? It's a time to raise awareness about digital equity and celebrate the efforts of organizations and individuals working to bridge the digital divide. This year’s theme, “Stronger Together: Mobilizing Towards Sustainability", highlighted the power of collaboration in advancing digital equity. Let’s ensure everyone has access to the tools and resources needed for success in our connected world. Big thank you to Meredith McVadon, Ashley Page, and Clare L. for leading the way in bridging the digital divide. Inclusion is so many things. Digital inclusion is essential and I’m proud to support the Center for Digital Equity. What does inclusion mean to you?

We co-founded the Digital Inclusion Fellowship Program with NTEN because equitable access to technology is at the core of Google Fiber’s mission. This program supports the work of leaders who are bridging the digital divide across the US! One fellow is Natali Betancur, Deputy Director of the Center for Digital Equity at the Queens University of Charlotte, where she focuses on how increased technological access and skills drives personal, civil, economic, and community development. Here's what Natali shared with us this #DigitalInclusionWeek: - Digital equity is about access and ongoing support for underserved communities. - Our communities need systems that can adapt to new technology and meet everyone's needs. - Collaboration is key to amplifying the impact of digital equity work. • There is no one “average” person who benefits from digital inclusion: Charlotte is diverse, and so are the community members who seek our services. But there are *definitely* some people who become ambassadors of sorts, and Dory Ward is one of them. Dory is a transplant to Charlotte, but so far she is all-in…and her story is a great illustration of why the CDE does what it does. Read her story here; it’s a good example of why digital inclusion activities are so important for a city like Charlotte. https://lnkd.in/ehBAG7ZE

  • As Digital Inclusion Week comes to a close, we find ourselves with many thoughts. Thoughts about collaboration, inclusion, and long-term sustainability. But also, in light of the hurricane, thoughts about how we deal with adversity and connect with each other. Hurricane Helene highlighted just how important it is to bridge the digital divide. Think, for a moment, how much harder it is to cope with such a tragedy without being connected. Imagine not having real-time updates and alerts about conditions in your area. Imagine not being able to find reliable information about shelters or safe routes out of the area. Imagine not being able to call and tell loved ones that you were OK. Imagine not being able to find resources to help you and your family in the aftermath. Natural disasters like this are horrible, but we need to learn from them. And one thing that they do is highlight just how wide the digital divide is still, and how important it is for us to bridge it. Lives could literally depend on it. #DIW2024 #DigitalEquity #Helene
