The old Toys “R” Us in Pineville closed in 2018 when the company went bankrupt, but it has come back to life temporarily as a movie set, with bright new letters. The upcoming motion picture “Roofman,” starring Channing Tatum, is shooting at various locations in the Charlotte area. As The Ledger reported in May, the movie recounts the tale of a fast-food robber who would gain entry by chopping holes in the roof. One of his hideouts was an empty Circuit City store on Independence Boulevard, and he would sneak into the Toys “R” Us next door. Last night's "Concert for Carolina" benefit at Bank of America Stadium raised more than $24.5 million for hurricane relief. But more than that, Lindsey Banks writes in our Mountain Updates newsletter today, it brought people together for a shared purpose. Amid the festive atmosphere, the concert balanced joy and grief, encapsulating a mix of healing, remembrance and a call to sustained support, she says. The concert featured an all-star lineup of Luke Combs, Eric Church, James Taylor, Sheryl Crow, Keith Urban, the Avett Brothers and Billy Strings and included surprise guests Nicole Kidman and Randy Travis. A particularly stirring moment arrived when Combs introduced Wesko, an amateur songwriter from Eastern North Carolina who had written “Helene” in tribute to the storm’s victims. You can read the full recap in today's issue of Mountain Updates (link in comment). Here's a scene of braclets across the stadium lighting up in Carolina blue as Eric Church sings his hit song "Carolina":
