Today, at #UNGA79 in New York, the International Fund for Public Interest Media launched its Investment Case and ambitious campaign: $150 million to support independent journalism in 50 low- and middle-income countries. In 2023 alone, 42 countries experienced democratic backsliding or a rise in autocratic systems of government, affecting 2.8 billion people (35% of the global population). Without facts, you can't have truth. Without truth, you can't have trust. Without trust, we have no shared reality, no democracy, and it becomes impossible to deal with our world's existential problems. We must #GiveTruthAVoice if we want to protect global democracy. "What we’re seeing globally, with even more acuteness in low and middle income countries, is a lot of outlets shutting down, or being captured by private or political interests. Perhaps more frequent and less visible, but extremely important, is a slow degradation of the capacity of media organisations working in the public interest to maintain their coverage and to hold power to account. That slow degradation is deeply worrying for the future of our information ecosystems and for democracy." We recently interviewed Pierrick Judeaux at the International Fund for Public Interest Media (IFPIM) on the critical role of funding independent journalism in low and middle-income countries. “Autocracies have realized that media is a cheap asset when it comes to controlling political influence, and that’s because media is not highly valued, and because there isn’t enough independent money to support journalism,” said the International Fund’s CEO Nishant Lalwani on a panel discussion entitled 'Rethinking Philanthropy: Can Money Save Democracy?' at Athens Democracy Forum last week. 📰 Read the full The New York Times article here: https://lnkd.in/gneF6JvF

“What we are witnessing is not a crisis of journalism, but a crisis of democracy itself. Societies without trustworthy news sources are defenseless against misinformation, corruption, and authoritarianism,” write Luminate's Principal of Global Programmes Alexandra Buccianti and Chief Executive Stephen King. The International Fund is thrilled to receive a significant new contribution from the Luminate Group, one of the Fund’s earliest supporters and a founding donor. This commitment of $2 million will support the Fund’s work to create fair value exchange between Big Tech and public interest journalism, help media outlets adapt to the rapidly changing tech landscape, and support research and learning. “This funding isn’t just a financial lifeline; it’s an investment in democracy.” #GiveTruthAVoice
In a world where truth is increasingly under siege, we’re continuing to make bold choices to protect our shared reality. Our new $2 million grant to further support the International Fund for Public Interest Media will empower IFPIM to tackle the Goliath of our time: Big Tech's impact on the media landscape. IFPIM's work is critical in supporting media outlets in the Global South, where less than 10% of donor funds typically reaches. From Nicaragua to Nepal, public interest media outlets are fighting to survive – and this support offers a lifeline: it's a strategic investment in fostering independent media where quality journalism can thrive alongside technological innovation. As we navigate the waters of AI and digital disruption, initiatives like IFPIM are crucial in preserving the integrity of our information ecosystem.
