This video is part of The Invading Sea's Climate Tech Minute series on Florida companies developing commercial products that address the causes and consequences of climate change. 1Print is 3D concrete-printing company. They design and produce resilient green-gray coastal protection solutions to mitigate the damage caused by extreme weather events in coastal communities. Products include artificial reefs and seawalls that integrate habitats for marine life. Gray-Green infrastructure combines both natural and constructed systems, with the "gray" being concrete structures and the "green" being living things like corals, plants and soil. The combination is used to reduce the impact of flooding and natural disasters. Gray infrastructure, including storm drains and pipes, will divert rainwater away from a city to the ocean or other bodies of water. But that runoff picks up pollutants like oil, fertilizer, and garbage along the way. Gray drainage systems also get overwhelmed, resulting in floods. On the other hand, green infrastructure, such as marshes, reefs, and mangroves, can soak up excess water, weaken wind and waves during storms, and absorb heat. Although it may require more space, planning, and costs, green infrastructure can offer better long-term benefits. The blue economy, at its core, is about developing ocean technology while protecting ocean life. It means sustainably using the ocean’s resources for jobs and economic growth. Also called the ocean economy, it includes aquaculture, fishing, renewable energy, tourism, transportation, marine research and more. With the longest coastline in the continental United States, Florida is responsible for roughly 20% of ocean-related commerce — around $95 billion and growing. This video is part of The Invading Sea's Climate Tech Minute series on Florida companies developing commercial products that address the causes and consequences of climate change. Jacob Ruytenbeek is founder and CEO of SailPlan, a Fort Lauderdale-based maritime analytics, efficiency and sustainability application. SailPlan is an emissions-monitoring platform for ships, helping them reduce their fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. While the shipping industry currently relies on emissions estimates based on fuel consumption, SailPlan’s data is from actual emissions coming out of the fuel stacks. As Ruytenbeek states, decarbonization is one of the greatest challenges facing humanity today. The problem isn’t limited to shipping; Every industry is facing it. SailPlan’s technology offers insights and opportunities to reach global net zero with certainty, according to Ruytenbeek. A carbon footprint is the total amount of greenhouse gases, especially carbon dioxide, that are released into the atmosphere by your activities. This includes things like driving a car, using electricity, and even the food you eat. It measures how much you contribute to climate change. Individuals, as well as industries and cities have a carbon footprint. You can reduce your footprint by choosing energy-efficient products, driving electric vehicles, using more public transportation and planting trees. To reduce emissions on a global scale, requires a global effort.
