About us

Recognizing the need for a new paradigm, The Mount Vernon School created a program that intentionally stepped back from traditional textbook lecture-based education, opening up avenues for students to engage in authentic, Interactive problem-solving, allowing for a greater depth of. This school within a school model is designed as a “test kitchen” for best practices in the future of 9th - 12th-grade education. 9th graders onboard by learning the culture and tools of collaboration, design, and project management. 11th and 12th-grade students participate in DESIGN BRIEFS, an immersive nine-week project cycle, partnering them with Fortune 500 businesses, nonprofits, and startups. Design Briefs: A small student team meets with their client to discuss an authentic challenge for the company. As students use the Design Brief Framework™️ to Discover, Define, Design, and Deploy solutions, they communicate with clients periodically for direction and feedback. During week 8, students schedule a meeting to present work to company executives. Students then write a Case Study of the brief and package/send all materials to their client. Learners get to experience making a difference and, in the process, discover their ability to be the leaders of tomorrow. Skill acquisition for this type of work includes Collaboration, Networking, Experimentation, Association, Observation, and Communication skills (spoken and written). We believe this is what school should be as students pause “the game of traditional school” to do authentic work instead. The Innovation Diploma Program isn’t a one-sided proposition. The businesses we collaborate with have found our student-led work to be interesting, innovative solutions. So, if you’re looking to partner with a forward-thinking, dynamic group of young thinkers or are simply curious about how this approach to education might benefit your organization, we’d be thrilled to have a conversation. Let’s make a difference together.
