Thank you to my wonderful colleague Charlee L Dulaney for revamping my work page! She suggested that I put my photo up top instead of all the way at the bottom—-which, in retrospect, makes way more sense! I also made sure to include my awesome Graduate Student Research Assistant Hexin Bi—because I appreciate and value her as a team member. I’ll continue to update my work page with more photos & highlights about each project I’m on—-varying from being the primarily evaluator on at least $7 million-worth of NIH & NSF grants via The Johns Hopkins University faculty projects or being a sounding board consultant across campus. Having an interdisciplinary training in Biology, Black Studies, & STEM Education has enhanced my capacity for communicating and brokering knowledge and tools across disciplines (physical, natural, & social sciences). Most importantly, when thinking about student experience and outcomes in these grants, I approach it with empathy. I ask myself, how does this survey question or research activity sound to a student—a student who may have disabilities, a student who may be the first in their family to go to college, a student who may feel isolated yet sticking out as a sore thumb being someone from a historically excluded group in the STEM fields, etc.? Well, I appreciate you, Charlee! Stay tuned for more work page updates! https://lnkd.in/ev6Tj59c

  • What cause is close to your heart? We love senior rescue pets…our very own dog Luna got featured on Newsweek:

Thanks Newsweek for featuring our 17-year-old rescue dog, Luna, who made a miraculous recovery & escaped euthanasia. We adopted her when she was 10 years old from Best Friends Animal Society in Los Angeles. I made this reel about a week and a half ago…and it’s been viewed on Instagram almost 2 million times as of right now. Also thanks El Espectador (Spanish news) for sharing Luna’s story: https://lnkd.in/eTnBYy7R I created our senior rescue dogs’ IG account shortly after I graduated from my Ph.D program…purely for fun! To check out their page, go here: https://lnkd.in/efP7_Gmr I’d also like to take this opportunity to advocate for our senior rescue dog friend named Dexter who is looking for his forever home. He’s running to be the President of your heart. Vote Dexter 2024! Please share & check out his page: https://lnkd.in/exq_SpTQ Finally, please consider contributing to my 40th birthday fundraiser for dogs like Dexter who’s a part of Doggie Harmony Rescue. I’m $2,234 away from meeting my fundraising goal—$500, $100, $50, $25, any amount goes a long way. Thanks for helping me continue my passion for senior rescue pets. Please make a contribution here: https://lnkd.in/eTtASnvD #adoptdontshop #animalrescue #vote2024

Thanks to the PRISM organizers for throwing this happy hour social tonight! We’re all trying to form an official LGBTQ+ ERG @ The Johns Hopkins University . I was also surprised to find out that there’s none (I believe there’s one at the JHU Medical/School of Medicine). Well, aside from meeting up all my fellow beautiful folks, I also got to meet K. Davina Frick & Lindsay Jeffers in-person after sharing many multiple virtual spaces together. Hopefully we’ll be an official ERG by our next gathering!

  • Check out Dr. Melo’s evaluation collaboration towards training the next generation of climate change and clean energy researchers:

“So just YES or NO, do you have a plan?” Even if you only have “a concept of a plan,” I can guide you towards creating a data-informed, innovative, solid plan! This is my approach that is only made possible with proactive collaboration with creative & open-minded stakeholders, such as the leaders of The Johns Hopkins University ‘s $5 million National Science Foundation (NSF) Global Center, Electric Power Innovation for a Carbon-Free Society (EPICS) @ the Ralph O’Connor Sustainable Energy Institute (ROSEI). For the next few years, EPICS will develop computing, economic, engineering, and policy methods and tools to enable a 100% emissions-free power grid. As this grant’s education program evaluator, I’m so excited in being a part of supporting the training of the next generation of climate change and clean energy researchers, particularly focused on power grid research. I enjoy collaborating with EPICS leaders such as Dr. Ben Hobbs & Dr. Uzi (Yury) Dvorkin (JHU Johns Hopkins Whiting School of Engineering ) along with their international collaborators such as Imperial College London , University of Melbourne , Georgia Institute of Technology , University of California, Davis , University of Strathclyde , The University of Edinburgh , Monash University , & Resources for the Future . Check out the EPICS webpage for more info on this timely and critical initiative: https://lnkd.in/dd5q2-cQ

Yesterday, there was a Discovery Fair for the staff of Johns Hopkins Krieger School of Arts and Sciences . Whoever organized this event deserves all the flowers—-they did such a fabulous job with the flight theme & lots of staff from different offices even dressed up as flight attendants! They had passports & prizes—-very fun & thoughtful ✈️ I won a paper plane game & got this hat 🧢 Great running into all the wonderful staff colleagues = the backbone of the university that keeps it going!! Thanks for your/our service & creativity. Thank a college staff member today——we are the most diverse group on campus!

Enjoyed having lunch this week @ a Charles Village landmark (Tamber’s) with my research collaborator, Nagma Zerin from the Johns Hopkins Whiting School of Engineering. As part of Dr. Zerin’s Keenan grant, she’s studying how students perceive pedagogical strategies that improve sense of belonging, inclusivity, & growth mindset that she has integrated into her own Cell Biology courses herself for undergrad students in the Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering (ChemBE) department. I’ve helped with deploying evaluation of her efforts to inform future iterations of these strategies in the classroom and also share with other STEM professors who care to transform their classroom culture as well. Over lunch, she has shared her own experiences as a former STEM student and some challenges with not feeling like she belonged. Who shares this story with us??? Thanks for your noble efforts & compassion for students! Here’s more on the Keenan Grant: https://lnkd.in/ePQ64m8i

Is this headshot “very demure, very mindful”??? 😂🤣 Thanks The Johns Hopkins University - Carey Business School for gifting us (Executive Certificate earners) professional headshots! I’m also sharing this photo to show my gratitude to CBE-Life Sciences Education editors for selecting manuscripts that are insightful and potentially innovative to send to reviewers like me. I appreciate their flexibility with working with our hectic time commitments (professional and personal). I’ve seen some posts on this platform, where some folks are pushing back on journals charging so much (to authors and readers) and demanding a lot of time from reviewers. Those are all valid opinions. However, I continue to review for CBE-LSE, because 1) it’s open access for readers and 2) it’s been expanding the critical frameworks, methodologies (not just quantitative), and disciplines represented. Even for authors, although there’s a fee, there’s a process to apply for a waiver. So although I agree with my dissenting reviewer colleagues, I make an exception for this particular (open access) journal.

Earned an Executive Certificate in Organizational Leadership @ The Johns Hopkins University - Carey Business School 🎓 Yesterday, went to the Awards ceremony & celebrated with some classmates like Ashley (Ash) Arwood (Applied Leadership Capstone) & Caroline DeLeon (DEI Leadership) to name a few. Also met fellow campus leaders like Toya Giles, B.A. & the outstanding director of the Academy for Women and Leadership Alexa S. Chilcutt, Ph.D. 🏆🏆 As a versatile leader, I value learning from various colleagues, disciplines, & perspectives. I enjoy learning new (to me) tools & frameworks & ways of navigating not just higher education, but the workplace and the world in general. 🌍 I work to create impact not merely manage checkboxes. 🙌🏽 Thanks to the CBS faculty & my working professional classmates!
