"What are...therapies" episode 1 is now on your favourite listening platforms (link in comments) and we are talking about "What is Occupational Therapy". OT awareness week continues and today I want to talk about when one may need an Occupational Therapist. The key to understanding this is in the work "Occupational"- if there is a disruption in the person's "Occupation"- this can be paid or unpaid and includes activities of daily living and leisure and if this disruption is chronic and causes distress- please find an Occupational Therapist to help you! Therapod Podcast with Banu Balaji has wrapped up its season 2 "Back to school" series The trajectory that we have been taught is ideal is go to play school, go to school, go to college, more college maybe or a job, marry? buy a house? have children? Unfortunately, life isn't a straight line and we know more and more children are struggling with the traditional schooling systems across the world. Or were they always struggling and we just better at recognising this? I know that for myself- there were parts of school I detested, and some I loved. I went in for my friends and did well to meet expectations set by very high Indian middle class standards - thats a whole other day's discussion! But back to the point of children and school- its estimated that 20% of children struggle with an impairment or difficulty and that 1 in 3 children in a mainstream school needs additional numbers. "back to school" series was a way to understand this and to get the adults around the children to think about how they can support them best. And sometimes, it might mean thinking outside the box and maybe even non traditional methods The latest and last episode in the series is a wrap up of all the conversations with our podcast guests ranging from neurodivergence, developmental difficulties, communication between parents and school, managing routines, screen time, sensory needs and lifestyle and more. We don't specially address mental health as a topic, because I believe that this kind of support addresses mental health needs in a way that is accessible to our young people. Remember! Young people really don't have much autonomy or decision making power when it comes to school and family systems and its the adults who need to make sure they are heard and minded and supported to learn and thrive.
