The TOWER Fellows are over halfway through the fall semester! This week we hosted two incredible individuals for our distinguished lecture series. Law professor Lucas Alexander Powe gave an insightful history of the Supreme Court, and Adam Klein, director of The University of Texas at Austin Robert Strauss Center for International Security and Law provided an eye-opening discussion on police surveillance. On Tuesday, our #LonghornHighlight took us to Goodwill Central Texas' Career and Technical Academy! We had a lovely time exploring the incredible opportunities Goodwill is providing to Texans. We have one of our most exciting weeks ahead, so be sure to follow the UT TOWER Fellows Program here on LinkedIn, and on Facebook and Instagram! #utaustin #towerfellows #community #academia #nextstep

It’s been an exciting week of exploration! We hosted a great group of prospective fellows on Monday for our TOWER Fellow for a Day program. We loved getting to know them and providing unique insights on campus, including a trip to Darrell K. Royal Texas Memorial Stadium. For our Distinguished Speaker Series, the fellows heard fascinating facts about the legendary Star Wars soundtracks from Jim Buhler and an intriguing lecture from chemical engineering professor Brian Korgel. It’s a busy weekend in Austin with Formula 1 races and a football game against Georgia, and the fellows are ready to dive in! #utaustin #towerfellows #nextstep #fortyacres #community

Nothing rivals the TOWER Fellow experience! On Wednesday, some of our fellows attended the Texas Fight Rally— an annual pep rally that amplifies school spirit during the week leading up to the Cotton Bowl. We are ready to watch our horns beat OU! In other events this week, we heard about how today’s political climate is portrayed in different ways from Dr. Roderick Hart, a communication studies professor. We also hosted geophysics professor and research scientist Thorsten Becker, who talked about studying earthquakes on an earth-sized scale. Last night, the fellows had a special opportunity to see MJ: The Musical on Thursday evening as one of our #LonghornHighlights. They have nothing but good reviews! There is always something to see at The University of Texas at Austin. #utaustin #community #redriverweek #academics #lifelonglearning #nextstep

It may be a bye week for Texas football, but the TOWER Fellows are as busy as ever! The fellows had the privilege of talking with The University of Texas at Austin Vice President and Athletics Director Chris Del Conte during a social Tuesday evening. He provided an in-depth look at the inner workings of UT’s incredible athletics program! Thursday, we celebrated the showing of "Citizens at Last: Texas Women Fight for the Vote," a short film co-created TOWER Fellow alumna Ellen Temple. In our Distinguished Speaker Series, we hosted professor James Scott for a talk titled “Isaac Newton’s Worst Mathematical Mistake,” on Monday. The fellows also heard about the value of storytelling from CEO and communications professional Robbie Vorhaus. The TOWER Fellows are ready to tackle all that October brings! #utaustin #lifelonglearning #community #towerfellows #nextstep

Austin is known as the live music capital of the world— which makes it the perfect place for TOWER Fellow John Allenberg to pursue his aspirations of becoming a devoted music writer. Allenberg is taking Music Journalism with professor Raoul Hernandez to get an inside scoop of what covering the music industry is all about. “Work for your passion, because you don’t want to work for the rest of your life for something you’re half invested in,” Hernandez said during his lecture September 17. Allenberg says he aims to start a blog that helps older adults get plugged in to new music. “I often find myself being the lone gray-hair amongst a sea of 20s and 30s when I go see live music,” Allenberg said. “I think a lot of people my age are missing out.” In his pursuit, Allenberg added that his classmates fuel his excitement and help to “keep his brain forever young.” “Sometimes when I get home at the end of a long day, I look in the mirror and I’m shocked to see that I’m actually the age that I am.” PICTURED: Professor Raoul Hernandez (left) with TOWER Fellow John Allenberg, Tuesday, Sept. 17, 2024. #towerfellows #lifelonglearning #utaustin #nextstep

Join us on Thursday, Oct. 3 for this special screening of "Citizens at Last: Texas Women Fight for the Vote," made possible in part by TOWER Fellows alumna Ellen Temple!
Five shorts from filmmakers behind RTF Professor Nancy Schiesari’s documentary "Citizens at Last: Texas Women Fight for the Vote" will screen at 6:30 pm at the Dolph Briscoe Center for American History on October 3rd. Medium recently published an article about the collaboration of artists and scholars that led to the making of Moody College of Communication's 2022 Creative Achievement Award-winning film, "Citizens at Last," a collaboration brought about through The UT TOWER Fellows Program program. https://lnkd.in/gUeTU2ZV

The TOWER Fellows are taking advantage of everything the program has to offer! We hosted our faculty advisors for dinner on Tuesday night and joined the Headliner's Club for an exclusive art showing Thursday. Our program prioritizes building community both on and off UT’s campus, and we are thankful for those who help us do so! The fellows also heard two engaging lectures about scaling problem solving and early western films this week from professors Maria Croyle and Kathy Fuller Seely, respectively.
