We’re a nonprofit with a mission to cultivate thinking citizens by shifting the paradigm of social studies education.
About us
Thinking Nation is nonprofit with a mission to cultivate thinking citizens who are college and career ready, through a combination of innovative supplemental curriculum, technology and professional development for teachers. We focus on improving literacy through social studies, with rigorous, inquiry-based methods for learning. We believe that when students are empowered to analyze information effectively, think historically, and write persuasively, not only do they become more engaged citizens, they can better promote equity in their own lives and the world around them. Our solution was born in the classroom of our Executive Director, at a charter school in South Los Angeles. Our vision is that all students should have access to a rigorous, inquiry-based method for learning, regardless of their zip code or economic status. Our equity-based pricing enables us to partner with schools and districts in underserved communities. Our scaffolded approach supports students and teachers in the process of learning to analyze documents, engage with materials, and constructing and writing essays beginning in middle school and continuing through high school. When these skills are cultivated in students from historically-underserved populations, there is better equity in education, from K-12 classrooms through the university campus.

Read the latest article from our own Zachary Coté reflecting on the state of education in Los Angeles. He reminds us, "Historical progress is never guaranteed and is always contingent on human choice."
At the beginning of the month, I attended a rejuvenating one day conference hosted by Alliance College-Ready Public Schools. I hope my summary of the day rejuvenates others who work so hard to strengthen public education.

Check out this week's blog post, which includes a link to a video and information about this afternoon's webinar on Socratic Seminars (there is still time to register).
My colleague Will Pulgarin, Ed.D. knocks this blog post out of the park today. We as educators must never lower the bar or expect less of students based on our perceptions. #historicalthinking #studentsuccess #inquirybasedlearning

Check out last week's blog as Zachary Coté summarizes some important conclusions from the recent American Historical Association report:
Last week, I reflected on the publication of the much needed report by the American Historical Association - "American Lesson Plan." This is good work and further proof that its a good idea to have historians doing the data-based scholarly research, no matter the field. Thanks to Nicholas Kryczka and Scot McFarlane for giving me some sneak peaks along the way! https://lnkd.in/gXZz33Xv #history #education

We began in a charter school serving black and brown children. The leaders here give blood, sweat and tears to change lives.
I love this event, and Thinking Nation is so proud to support it ❤️

AHA's 2024 Report "American Lesson Plan: Teaching US History in Secondary Schools" is a must read: https://lnkd.in/g5M3HySV
Thank you EdWeek for sharing the report from our friends at American Historical Association. History teachers do not deserve the disrespect from politicians and others with agendas that are harmful to students.
