Why settle for what and how to when we can ask why and what if?
thinkLaw Founder/CEO, Author of Thinking Like a Lawyer: A Practical Framework to Teach Critical Thinking to All Students
We've all seen the assignment where students pick their favorite historical figure and create a compelling visual presentation with hometowns, famous accomplishments, and fun facts about heroes like Ruby Bridges, Muhammad Ali and Carter G. Woodson. But there was something powerful that happened with Wilson School District No 7 teacher leaders after two days of powerful, but PRACTICAL work on transforming Tier 1 Instruction in the thinkLaw Arizona Summer Institute: collectively, we realized that this wasn't good enough. We don't want our kids to regurgitate googled facts about Ruby Bridges, Muhammad Ali and Carter G. Woodson. We want them to BECOME Ruby Bridges, Muhammad Ali and Carter G. Woodson! By using higher order questions and infusing critical thinking into EXISTING content, we can get our students to stop asking "what" and "how to" and start asking "why" and "what if." Because we can't just settle for teaching students the way it is. They need the tools to both look at the way it is AND create the world as it OUGHT to be. This is the work! The movement continues! #WhereIsthinkLaw
thinkLaw Founder/CEO, Author of Thinking Like a Lawyer: A Practical Framework to Teach Critical Thinking to All Students
Equity work is disruptive work. And that disruption MUST happen at the classroom level! 2024 has been a wild year so far. The work I've been leading with thinkLaw to create a world where critical thinking is no longer a luxury good has been blowing up all over the country! Over the next few days I want to share a few exciting stories of partnerships where this work is really taking off in classrooms. Let's start in the Bay! This summer, defying the norm of summer school experiences filled with drill & kill style remediation, San Lorenzo Unified School District is using thinkLaw's critical thinking curriculum for their primary and middle school grades! I had a blast leading this kickoff, and can't wait to see how these committed teachers transfer the higher order questions they are engaging in this summer to their classrooms! #WhereIsthinkLaw #thinkLawInCA #ThinkingLikeALawyer #TangibleEquity #CriticalThinking #BecauseNotDespite

thinkLaw Founder/CEO, Author of Thinking Like a Lawyer: A Practical Framework to Teach Critical Thinking to All Students
When I founded thinkLaw 9 years ago, I didn't realize what it meant that an idea of "law for kids" that I typed on my laptop in early 2015 could transform into a critical thinking revolution impacting school systems across 40+ states, two books, and thousands of global ambassadors for this work. This is why it means so much for me to be receiving the legacy award from the Black Male Educators Alliance (BMEA) this weekend in Detroit. When I think about the way transformational Black male educators like Mr. McNeil, Mr. Joseph, and Mr. Holgate impacted my middle school education at IS 285, I feel honored to continue their legacy. And when I look at the work of Black Male educators in the classroom today and the pipelines we create for tomorrow, it gives me goosebumps to imagine what it will mean for them when we fulfill our mission of creating a world where access to critical thinking is no longer a luxury good. I am so excited to be able to celebrate this honor and I am very grateful for the privilege to be able to lead this work! Education Leaders of Color Doug

"So, here we are, standing at the crossroads of education, ready to tackle the unsexy, hard-nosed work of mastering basic math. Because that’s how we prepare our kids not just for the tests and the grades, but for life." Check out this post from Patrick H. Jones II, Ed.D.!
Fellow educators and parents! It’s time to challenge what’s really going on out here with math learning! 📚✨ Let's prioritize mastering math to enhance problem-solving and critical thinking. Together, we can close the educational gap and prepare our kids for real-world challenges. #MathEducation #CriticalThinking #ProblemSolving #EducationReform #KumonOut #MathMastery https://lnkd.in/gK27mEN6

If you knew that only 8% of your Black students were proficient, what would you do? Would you design an intervention plan? increase access to tutoring? What if we took an entirely different approach? What if we zeroed in on that 8% and found out what’s going on in their classrooms that is working? What’s working well at home? What can we replicate? To help you put the core concepts into practice, we created the Tangible Equity book study. Place your order or request a quote today. https://zurl.co/fU6y

It can be hard to visualize a concrete finish line for #DEIB efforts. We could easily go off-task, forget our long-term direction, and lose the will to fight when things get challenging. We get there when the DREAM work becomes the BE work. Read thinkLaw founder Colin Seale's reflections and if you like what you read, dig in deeper with his book #TangibleEquity. https://zurl.co/LKfP
