I am on a few Reddit chat groups and of course Linkedin, and I have seen a lot of posts/memes about toxic workplace culture. It's sad that people have to spend their days in a bad environment. I have seen it. I know how it can be a really hard place to be. I also know that intentional organizational behavioral change can really make a workplace transform. It is my wish that companies make the changes they need to make, and value their most greatest resource: their employees. Holistic approaches to employee well-being are proven to reduce stress, prevent burnout, and foster a sense of belonging. This, in turn, boosts engagement, retention, and productivity across teams. I want to share something that changed the way I approach both my daily life and my and leadership style, and I think it might resonate with you. In the early 2000s, I was a leader in a large non-profit agency. I found myself juggling multiple projects, constantly putting out fires, and feeling overwhelmed. I was also a single parent raising teenagers and I was distracted, stressed, and stuck in reactive mode. The more I took on, the more everything seemed to spiral out of control. One day I passed out at work. I woke up in the hospital with an IV in my arm. I knew it was time for a change. After a series of stress-induced health issues, a practitioner recommended I try yoga. I was very resistant as I couldn’t even get down on the floor. I weighed 250 pounds at the time. But yoga saved me. It became more than a physical practice. It had a beneficial component of mindfulness. When I started practicing mindfulness regularly, everything shifted. My health improved, I enhanced my focus, my decision-making became clearer, and most importantly, my connection with people deepened. I have become very calm, empathetic, and purposeful in my life. I am sharing this personal story because I have discovered that mindfulness is not just a personal wellness tool—it can be very useful in the work environment. It can actually be a performance booster for leaders and teams alike. Those who have received my mindful leadership development coaching make clearer decisions, communicate more effectively, and build trust with the people they work with. They lead their teams to become more engaged, creative, and resilient. When practiced consistently, mindfulness has been shown to improve focus, reduce stress, and foster better communication—key drivers of workplace performance. One thing I have learned as a consultant that if you put employee wellness programs in place, they are not utilized unless there is a workplace culture that supports it. We work directly with organizations so that the programs we put in place are specific to the needs of the company AND their employees. Cultural change is what is needed, not simply an EAP. Whew! Have you ever been in a toxic work environment? It's something too many people have gone through! Perhaps you have experienced: - passive aggressive communication - unrealistic expectations - lack of support and when you were at work you were: - unmotivated - burnt out - walking on eggshells You had a hard hit in your mental and physical well-being! Maybe that is what you are going through now! If it is, here are some hints to get you through the day. Set Boundaries: Protect your time and energy. Saying "no" doesn’t mean you’re failing; it means you're prioritizing your well-being. Build Your Support Network: Surround yourself with colleagues, mentors, or friends who lift you up. Having people to vent to (constructively!) can be a lifesaver. Practice Mindfulness: Ground yourself with mindful moments during the day. A few minutes of deep breathing can help shift your mindset from stress to calm. Document Everything: Keep a record of interactions, work progress, and any toxic behavior. This can provide a safety net if things escalate. Consider Your Exit Strategy: If the environment doesn’t improve, it may be time to move on. Remember, no job is worth sacrificing your mental health! 💡 Hopeful Solution: While it’s hard to change the entire company culture overnight, you can start with yourself. Advocate for open communication, practice kindness, and lead by example—even if you're not in a leadership role.
