Future-oriented ideas for the challenges and opportunities of a new era.

About us

Third Way is a national think tank that champions modern center-left ideas. Our work is grounded in the mainstream American values of opportunity, freedom, and security. But we identify as center-left, because we see that space in U.S. politics as offering the only real path for advancing those ideals in the century ahead. Our agenda is ambitious, aspirational, and actionable. It is built on the bedrock belief that for political movements to succeed in our political system, they must relentlessly re-imagine their policies, strategies, and coalitions. We are fighting for opportunity, so everyone has the chance to earn a good life; progress on social issues, so all have the freedom to live the lives they choose; and security, so we are protected from 21st century global threats. Our competitive advantage lies in our high-impact advocacy campaigns that combine rigorous policy research with a unique and incisive understanding of the vast American middle—the people who ultimately decide majorities and provide mandates for change. We design our work to persuade elected officials, intellectuals, advocates, the media, and others with political influence. Winner of the 2013 North American Think Tank of the Year by Prospect Magazine, Britain’s leading monthly current affairs magazine, for its ‘original, influential, and rigorous work on the most pressing challenges facing people, governments, and businesses.’ Third Way’s impact on the debate has prompted Reuters to opine: "Third Way is the future of think tanks" and The New York Times to note that the organization “has become a constant presence in Washington.” POLITICO’s Mike Allen wrote that Third Way is “the moderate voice of the progressive movement.” And Greg Easterbrook of The Atlantic observed that Third Way “is rapidly emerging as Washington’s most important beyond-ideology think tank.” *FOLLOW US ON FACEBOOK www.fb.com/ThirdWayThinkTank *FOLLOW US ON TWITTER @ThirdWayTweet

We're excited to highlight some of our great Moderate Power Venture Fund grantees, like The Next 50! They used the MPVF to launch their Civic Leadership Development Program. This program addresses critical gaps in support for newly elected officials. CLDP experienced robust growth after launching at the DNC in Chicago. The program has developed 17 best-practice modules, published over 100 pages of original content, and engaged in depth with dozens of leaders. The inaugural Civic Leadership Summit, held in partnership with The NewDEAL, brought together prominent figures like Rep. Patrick Ryan and Secretary Buttigieg to focus on governance in challenging districts and maintaining personal-public life balance. Looking ahead, The Next 50 aims to expand the program by launching a Peer Mentorship initiative, updating its Best Practices Handbook, and scaling its support services. Through these efforts, they are equipping the next generation of political leaders with the tools to thrive. You can read more about the MPVF and its inaugural cohort here: https://lnkd.in/eSU3E4is

“Repeal and replace” is back. The incoming Trump Administration has made clear that they intend to roll back the ACA, even without a replacement plan in sight. So how should Democrats handle this?   In our latest memo, we make the case for centering the defense of the ACA around costs. Nearly everything the GOP will propose will shift costs to patients and hardworking American families. People could lose protections on pre-existing conditions, health care benefits, and tax credits to help with their premiums, which will all lead to higher costs. • Today, we're proud to announce the Inaugural Grantee Cohort for the Moderate Power Venture Fund! We established MPVF earlier this year to support outstanding promising projects working in innovative ways to increase social capital and political power on the center left. "We are thrilled to have the opportunity to support and begin building relationships with this exceptional group of grantees,” said Third Way President Jon Cowan.   MPVF Inaugural Cohort member projects include: 1/ Center-Left Message Huddle & Newsletter by Team Common Sense Common Sense Coalition will utilize MPVF funds to create a strategy group “huddle” of leading messaging experts and publish a corresponding weekly newsletter to the broader center-left ecosystem. 2/ Civic Leadership Development Program by The Next 50 The Next 50 will use its MPVF grant to build out its Civic Leadership Development Program to provide young, elected leaders with the necessary tools and resources to help them effectively manage the day-to-day demands of elected office. 3/ Flywheel Expansion by The Welcome Party The Welcome Party’s MPVF-enabled Flywheel Expansion project will employ online and offline tactics to grow the audience of the WelcomeStack.org newsletter and leverage that expanded audience to increase small-dollar investments in center-left causes and candidates. 4/ Young People's Alliance The Young People's Alliance will apply its MPVF grant toward creating a bipartisan youth platform to mobilize young people across party lines around shared interests as well as a national chapter program that will get young people involved in advocacy on college campuses around the country. We cannot wait to collaborate with each group and see their innovative ideas come to life to expand the voice and reach of the center left! Read the more here: https://lnkd.in/eAq5SK28
