This World Contraception Day, we continue broadening access to contraceptive options for women across the country via Nurx by Thirty Madison. Access to contraception is fundamental to reproductive autonomy and economic mobility, according to the Brookings Institute. And yet, of the 66 million women of reproductive age living in the U.S., more than 19 million live in contraceptive deserts. Access to care matters. Further, there is a lack of education on how and why women use birth control: more than 75% of our patients cite reasons for seeking birth control beyond preventing pregnancy. Why? Because birth control can also help women improve their quality of life, manage period symptoms, and manage symptoms of more complex gynecological conditions. Nurx Medical Director Dr. Navya Mysore shared her insights with Woman’s World to discuss a new gene variant linked to early menopause. Women who experience early menopause — which can occur as early as the age of 42 — may face unique health challenges, like a higher risk of osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease. It can also affect fertility. “If we are able to identify early on that a patient may develop primary ovarian insufficiency (POI), they can be more empowered to make informed reproductive choices and get ahead of the symptoms associated with early menopause,” says Dr. Mysore. A new study published in JAMA, Journal of the American Medical Association, suggests the overturning of Roe v. Wade impacted women's decisions on sterilizations, a form of irreversible contraception. From The New York Times: "In states that effectively banned abortion, the sterilization rate climbed to 5 in 10,000 women by December 2022 from an average of 3.6 per 10,000 women per month in the 18 months before Dobbs." Nurx's 2024 Reproductive Rights Watch survey found 8% of women surveyed had explored irreversible contraception as a result of the political environment surrounding reproductive and sexual health.

Restrictions on reproductive care are having broader impacts on the healthcare system at-large - including how women think about their birth control and emergency contraception. Thirty Madison's Chief Business Officer Caroline Hofmann spoke with Modern Retail to discuss the importance of broader access to care and why we need continued awareness around the topic of birth control utilization: "We want women to have all the information they need because everyone’s making a different choice for themselves.” Read the full article at the link below.

From Axios today: Women in California report heightened anxiety about the state of reproductive rights despite living in a blue state. Data from the Nurx's Reproductive Rights Watch for women in California: - 36% of women surveyed in California said they aren't confident that their right to use contraception is secure. - 38% also said they feel anxiety about accessing in-person care for reproductive and sexual health. - 71% have changed at least one health-related behavior in response to the political environment, including delaying preventive care, joining reproductive rights advocacy efforts, seeking emergency contraception and exploring sterilization. "We're seeing in this data that even when they live in places where the political environment is probably more favorable to their reproductive rights, women increasingly don't take all of these things for granted," Caroline Hofmann, chief business officer at Thirty Madison. Just how difficult has the reproductive care environment become for women? As restrictions to care continue to be implemented in states like Iowa, results from Nurx’s Reproductive Rights Watch 2024 shed light on how these restrictions further complicate access to women’s health: - Over a third of women are facing longer than usual wait times due to restrictive reproductive care environments - Over a third of women are now using Telehealth due to the political environment - A quarter of women have experience judgment or shame in in-person provider settings Women’s healthcare experiences are paramount to driving health outcomes - which is why our focus should be on broadening access, not restricting it. Today, we published the results of our Nurx survey: Reproductive Rights Watch 2024: How Women Are Responding to The Shifting Care Landscape. Among the findings, we found more than half of women surveyed are anxious about their reproductive freedoms given the political environment, and 49% of women feel anxiety about accessing in-person care for their reproductive and sexual health. Nurx remains committed to providing specialty healthcare to women that is accessible and personalized -  and with the results from this survey, we’re taking action. In a world that is trying to control care, control access, and control bodies, Nurx stands for putting the control back where it belongs: in women’s hands. We’re partnering with others in the women’s healthcare space over the coming months to speak out and help women take action and gain clarity on their reproductive and sexual healthcare choices. How you can help: - View the press release and share data from the survey: - Explore the full report: Nurx.com/repro-rights-2024 - Share your reactions to the survey - do the responses resonate with you?
