The largest privately held service provider in our industry, Thomas & Company (formerly Thomas & Thorngren) provides our clients with unmatched unemployment cost control, employment verification and tax credit services. These recent severe storms and hurricanes across the U.S. have led several states to make Disaster Unemployment Assistance (DUA) benefits available to impacted workers. As the damage from these storms continues to be evaluated, we anticipate that more states and counties will become eligible for DUA benefits as recovery efforts progress. Disaster Unemployment Assistance (DUA) provides temporary benefits to people who lost employment or had their employment impacted because of a major disaster. This also includes individuals who are self-employed. If you or your employees were impacted by a disaster related event, the first step is to apply for regular unemployment benefits and let the state know that there is a lack of work due to a natural disaster. If regular unemployment benefits cannot be paid, then the individual can apply for DUA benefits. Some states may waive traditional requirements such as the waiting week or work search requirements during these disaster periods to get benefits paid quicker but these waivers vary from state to state. To qualify for DUA, individuals must meet both conditions below: 1. Their job must have been lost or interrupted because of a presidentially declared disaster, and 2. They must not be eligible for regular unemployment insurance benefits. If they lived, worked, or were scheduled to work in the declared disaster area, they may qualify for assistance if they meet any of the following conditions: 🞄No longer have a job or place to work. 🞄Can’t reach their job site. 🞄Can’t work because of damage to the job site. 🞄Were about to start a new job but, due to the disaster, the job no longer exists. 🞄Can’t work because of an injury caused by the disaster. 🞄Became the major support for a household because the head of household died due to the disaster. Individuals must be available and able to work, unless they meet one of these two conditions: 🞄They have an injury caused by the disaster, or 🞄They are taking steps to return to self-employment. #ThomasAndCompany #WeEnableSuccess #DUABenefits #Unemployment
