We are the men and women of steel. We are forging the future, creating tomorrow’s infrastructure today.
About us
Thompson Metal Fab is the backbone of the future. We are skillfully forging this country's future with heavy structural steel and plate fabrication, right from the shores of the mighty Columbia River in Vancouver, Washington. Our technically advanced facility features (10) huge bays, 336,000 square feet of indoor fabrication space, a 15-acre yard for assembly and fit-up, hydro cranes, 40-ton moving dollies, our own onsite coatings department, and access to the Pacific Ocean via our deep-water port - as well as ground, rail and air access. Just like you, we work hard and we work smart. We are committed to each other and the people and institutions we serve. We do the job right and we do it safely (our safety record is one of the many things that sets us apart from our competitors). As a Veteran-Owned Small Business, we believe in this country, in our future, and in our strength united. From the early days when our predecessors were constructing Liberty Ships right here on the river to today's North Slope oil rig work, we are working together to make our tomorrow's bolder, brighter and safer. We are Thompson Metal Fab, and We are Forging the Future

We had some great conversations a few weeks back at Clean Currents 2024. That conference brings together the hydroelectric and offshore renewable worlds, both important markets to TMF. At TMF, we're **here for it** when it comes to offshore wind advancement on the west coast. Curious what we can do for your projects? Get in touch! We're happy to show you around the shop, in person or virtually! #TMFab #offshorewind #cleancurrents2024 #cleancurrents24 #steelfab #fabrication #westcoastwindpower

Happy Steel Days! Today, our Michael Moore is attending a welding competition at Clark College. It’s hosted by Pacific Northwest Steel Fabricators' Association (PNSFA) in celebration of Steel Days (American Institute of Steel Construction) High school students from multiple schools are here and being supported by local fabricators, suppliers, and those that bring steel to life! #steeldays #AISC #clarkcollege #welding #tmfab #students

Project highlight: WSDOT Colman VTS (Vehicle Transition Structure) This project is a bridge/ramp that allows people to drive from the Colman Dock Ferry Terminal and onto the ferry. This structure will be mechanically operated, it moves up or down to meet and match the level of the ferry. The Colman Dock is located in Seattle. When this project is completed, it will ship by barge from our facility to the jobsite. As demonstrated in this photo, weld zones can sometimes be difficult to access – it makes you really appreciate the skill these folks have. #TMFab #WSDOTinfrastructure #WSDOT #WAinfrastructure #WAferries #steelfab #fabrication #PNWsteelfab Washington State Department of Transportation

Take a peek inside the paint bay at one of the spires for the Bollinger Pedestrian Bridge. Paint is so important. Besides offering corrosion protection, it really is what people judge structures on. The end result needs to be pleasing to the eye. We've got a very talented in-house paint crew. #TMFab #Bollinger #BollingerPedestrianBridge #pedestrianbridges #bridgebuilding #industrialpaint #inhousepaintcrew #pnwsteelfab

Always love to see new pictures coming out of the shop! Here's the City of Chico CA Highway 99 Pedestrian & Bicycle Bridge. The design of the bridge incorporates the look of a tree, and is intended to reflect the history, culture, and overall atmosphere of Chico. #TMFab #chicopedestrianbridge #cityofchico #chicocalifornia #bridgebuilders #steelbridges #bridgedesign #steelfabrication #pnwsteel #westcoaststeel

We're working on the P66 Ferndale Wharf Causeway Replacement Project with Manson Construction Co. The Ferndale Refinery Marine Terminal was built circa 1953, using creosote-treated timber piling and lumber. The pierhead was substantially rebuilt in the early 1990s and is now primarily constructed of concrete. The causeway and pipeway are of timber construction and supported mostly on timber piles. The timber structure has reached the end of its design life and is being replaced in this project. The scope of work for the project includes the staged replacement of the causeway with new concrete deck, pile caps, and steel piling, as well as replacing pipeway supports with steel girders. The causeway is approximately 1,800 feet in length. Our scope of work (to date) has included: 🛳 Girders 🛳 Perimeter Beams 🛳 Expansion Loop Beams 🛳 Pile caps 🛳 Pipe Supports 🛳 Beam Connections 🛳 Outfall Supports 🛳 Light pole base supports 🛳 Cable tray supports 🛳 Guardrail posts 🛳 Guardrail 🛳 Ladders 🛳 Studded Embed Plates 🛳 Seismic Joints 🛳 Expansion Joint Cover Plates #TMFab #FerndaleWharf #P66 #causewayreplacement #ferndalerefinery #marinefabrication #westcoaststeel

Over many years of fabricating modular e-houses, we've gotten really good at building these things. Our current order in shop is for twenty more. When you get an order for 20 of something, you know you're doing it right! These modular buildings are turn-key. All design work, fabrication, equipment integration, electrical, insulation, and paint is all done. At the site, these just need to be installed and they're ready to use. Here are a few pics of a previous set further along in their fabrication, and some images of the current batch working their way through our shop. We're able to ship over the road and via barge directly from our facility on the Columbia River. #TMFab #ehouses #modularbuildings #turnkeydesign #steelfabrication #westcoaststeel #vanwaindustry #fabrication #steelfab

Recent pictures inside TMF looking at various sub-assemblies for the Vehicle Transfer Span (VTS) being fabricated for Washington State Department of Transportation. This project will ultimately deliver to the Colman Dock in Seattle and will allow cars to be safely loaded/unloaded from the ferry, acting as a bridge between the ferry and the terminal. When this project is completed, it will ship via barge from Thompson Metal Fab to the jobsite. The design of the VTS resembles what we'd commonly see in barge type fabrication (although the VTS doesn't float) and incorporates orthotropic deck fabrication, similar to bridges across the country. #TMFab #VTS #washingtonstateferries #orthotropic #steelfabrication #pnwsteel #ferrydock
