ICYMI: California’s #SB707 was signed over the weekend and we couldn’t be happier 🖋 Over the last couple of years, we’ve been working closely with Rachel Van Metre Kibbe, ACT (American Circular Textiles), and its members to shape bills that have a major, positive impact on our planet, and more specifically, clean up the fashion waste problem. While the bill is a step in the right direction, we are working to get us closer to a unified waste policy at the federal level. We know we can get there, we just need more participation! Thank you Kate Nishimura and WWD for deep diving into this policy and capturing the significance of this bill in textile recycling 👕 👗 ♻

A great step in the right direction! According to an article in The Business of Fashion, California SB707 has been passed with broad support from state legislators last month that tackles the growing problem of fashion and textile waste could change the way we dispose of clothes we no longer have use for. If passed, the first-in-the-nation bill, the Responsible Textile Recovery Act, would require producers of apparel, towels, bedding and upholstery to implement and fund a statewide reuse, repair and recycling program for their products, in hopes to ultimately incentivize manufacturers to adopt less wasteful practices and create greener designs. "Since 1960, the amount of textile waste generated in the US has increased nearly tenfold, exceeding more than 17 million tonnes in 2018. A shocking 85 percent of all textiles end up in landfills where they emit methane gas and leach chemicals and dyes into our soil and groundwater. And only about 15 percent of clothing and other textiles gets reused, even though an estimated 95 percent of the materials – including fabrics, yarns, fibres, zippers and buttons – are recyclable." Thank you Josh Newman for tackling such an important issue, and thank you to Victoria Namkung for covering the mandate. Read more on BoF here.

New Episode! James Reinhart, CEO of ThredUp, built a high quality used apparel marketplace from an idea to millions of customers that has great clothing options, which were previously overlooked, for reasonable prices. His journey wasn't an easy one and not everyone thought the idea would work. James persevered on and thredUP today is regarded as the best in the category, offering so much inventory with prices on items for like only $5. He shares how the idea originated, what the original plan was, and solving the marketplace issue of getting the clothes and customers at the same time. James also touches on his unique company culture by having a 4 day work week and his future aspirations! Thank you to Laura Hogya for helping to make this happen! Another reason why choosing secondhand is better than opting for fast fashion! Thank you Danielle L. Vermeer for the breakdown. In most resale marketplaces, you will find better quality & cleaner materials for sometimes even less than SHEIN + TEMU. #shopbetter #shopcircular #choosesecondhand

Why is everything polyester (aka plastic) now? Cheap brands like SHEIN charge $5 for 100% polyester tops. "Premium" brands like House of CB charge $200 for 97% polyester dresses. It took polyester, otherwise known as polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and derived from petroleum... 🧪 40 years to go from lab to mass market 👖 another 40 years for polyester to be the most commonly used fiber 🧵 60%+ of new clothes manufactured are polyester or synthetics 🌎 1/3 of ocean microplastics are from washing synthetic clothing Fashion brands use polyester for various reasons (e.g., stretch, moisture-wicking, colorfastness). But the main reason is cost—polyester is way cheaper! According to a Bloomberg & Royal College of Art study, more than 90% of SHEIN clothes are made with virgin polyester. But it wasn't always this way. 20 years ago, you could find 100% cotton or silk for reasonable prices even at fast fashion brands like Forever 21. Now everything—from fast fashion to thrift stores to oceans—are drowning in polyester plastic clothes. The good news is that it's easier than ever to find 100% natural fibers secondhand. 🔎 Search & filter by material on ThredUp and other resale apps ♻ Check garment tags at thrift stores (see cheat sheet below) What's your take on polyester? Are you prioritizing natural vs. synthetic fibers in your clothing purchases? —— Hi, I'm Danielle 👋. I've been an avid thrifter for 20+ years and 100% of my closet has been secondhand or vintage for 13+ years. Follow for insights from launching luxury resale at Amazon Fashion and now building Teleport—the "TikTok for thrifting" app to style, sell, and shop secondhand fashion from an AI-curated feed of outfit videos.

As we head into the weekend, don't forget to join us in our fight to remove sales tax on secondhand items by signing our petition on Action Network. Currently, many states tax secondhand goods, including thrifted items. That means consumers pay sales tax twice on the same item: once on the initial purchase and again when it’s bought secondhand. Let's make it easier and economically friendlier to shop #secondhand. 🖋 Sign our petition via the link below ♻ Follow ACT (American Circular Textiles) and its members to continue promoting the campaign ↗  Share the petition on social media and tag #EndSecondhandTax
