With consumers prioritizing value, especially amid economic uncertainty, secondhand apparel offers a compelling alternative," said ThredUp CEO James Reinhart. Today, we released data revealing insights about how tariffs are impacting consumers and retailers. The TLDR: Tariffs are expected to provide a tailwind to the secondhand market as shoppers seek more affordable options; and retailers see resale as a more stable and predictable way to source apparel inventory in the face of global supply chain disruptions. Key findings include: 👚 59% of consumers say if new government policies around tariffs and trade make apparel more expensive, they will seek more affordable options like secondhand. 💰 Consumers plan to spend 34% of their apparel budget on secondhand in the next 12 months. 🌏 44% of retail executives are looking to reduce reliance on imported goods. 👖 54% of retail executives believe resale offers a more stable and predictable source of clothing in the face of potential tariff fluctuations. Thrifters using our new AI shopping features are 65% more likely to get an item that they like. Our Chief Product and Technology Officer Dan DeMeyere says that with generative AI, ThredUp is on the path to becoming a personal thrift store for each of its customers. We're solving for the overwhelm that comes with a platform housing more than 4 million unique items at any given time, and it's just the beginning.
