Every parent wishes there was a guidebook to navigating the nuances of teenage relationships. For many girls with autism, life after puberty is challenging. Of course the same could be said of girls who are not on the spectrum. As girls with autism enter their teenage years, many struggle to keep up with the elaborate rules of social relationships, making them susceptible to higher rates of anxiety and depression. For many women and girls, communicating with others about relationships, clothing, career goals, and other things of interest is key for social engagement. This may not be true for women and girls on the spectrum, as socializing can feel exhausting and overwhelming. So, women and girls with autism that struggle socially often become isolated. Finding your “tribe” can be incredibly difficult for teens or young adults. However, those with ASD often struggle socially due to their specialized interest in a specific topic or thing. And although these special interests can make it hard to converse with others, they are fantastic to have and can put a person living with autism on a path that leads to a career in that area of interest.
