About us
Mission: The NYS Thruway Authority operates and maintains a reliable, user-fee supported Vision: To operate and maintain an essential transportation corridor that supports and enhances economic activity, by reliably delivering high levels of safety, convenience, and service while modernizing to meet dynamic customer and partner needs in a financially responsible manner. Our History The Governor Thomas E. Dewey Thruway, built in the early 1950s, is one of the oldest components of the National Interstate Highway System and one of the longest toll roads in the nation. It set the standard for modern highway geometric design with safe roadway characteristics including smooth curves, wide medians, and unobstructed driver sight distances. For more than 60 years, the Thruway system has been essential for commerce and travel in the Northeast. About one-third of all vehicles using the Thruway are from out of state. The Thruway System also plays a vital role in New York State's economy. This 570-mile superhighway, with 815 bridges, 118 interchanges and 27 service areas, connects New York's principal cities, rural areas, and tourist destinations. The mainline of the Thruway extends 426 miles, from New York City to Buffalo (I-87 and I-90). Other elements of the system include the New England Thruway (I-95), the Cross Westchester Expressway (I-287), the Garden State Parkway Connector, the Berkshire Connector (I-90), the Niagara Thruway (I-190), and the Erie Section (I90). The Thruway converted to an entirely cashless tolling system in November 2020.

National Attention on Work Zone Safety -The video we shared yesterday, capturing a heart-stopping moment as a NYSDOT worker narrowly avoided a box truck crashing into a work zone was featured today on Good Morning America. Every day, our highway workers put their lives on the line to keep New York’s roads safe. Let’s protect those who protect us—always slow down, stay alert, and move over in work zones. #WorkZoneSafety

THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE! This video from our partners at the New York State Department of Transportation comes in the same week that the Thruway lost one of our beloved colleagues who was hit and killed while simply doing his job. Our roadside workers NEED YOUR ATTENTION. Help them get home safe and SLOW DOWN!
Our highway workers put their lives on the line every day to keep NY roads safe, and this recent work zone crash on I-81 near Whitney Point is a frightening reminder of the dangers they face. Fortunately, there were no serious injuries, but it could have been MUCH worse. To everyone on the road: These crashes are avoidable! Slow down, move over if possible, and stay alert in work zones—these simple actions can save lives.

We're proud to be working with the New York State Thruway Authority to use #drones as a tool for safer, faster, and more efficient infrastructure inspection and data visualization work! Great work and congratulations! #UAS #Inspections #InfrastructureInspections
The Thruway Authority is leveraging technology for the safety of drivers and employees. Recently, the Thruway's Engineering Department and its Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) crew partnered with NUAIR to demonstrate the benefits of drones, particularly when it comes to bridge inspections. The Thruway’s drone program is starting to deliver datasets that were previously deemed unattainable through conventional methods, ranging from structural inspections of assets to monitoring construction projects and environmental conditions. NY's Move Over Law protects drivers, pedestrians, highway workers, emergency responders, and ALL VEHICLES. This means when you see ANY vehicle (including work zones) on the side of the highway: • Slow down & Move over when it is safe to do so It’s the law!

STATEMENT BY THRUWAY AUTHORITY EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR FRANK. G. HOARE, ESQ. “On Monday, November 4, 2024, the Thruway Authority lost one of its own, who tragically lost his life after being struck by a vehicle while working on the Thruway (I-90) in Silver Creek. Stephen “Steve” Ebling was a Thruway Maintenance Supervisor based in the Thruway’s Silver Creek Section out of the Buffalo Maintenance Division. Steve was a committed public servant, having devoted 15 years of his career to the Thruway Authority and is remembered by his fellow colleagues as a hardworking and dedicated person who was always willing to help. Steve’s wife Belindie and their two sons Brett and Joel are forever in our thoughts and prayers. It cannot be emphasized enough that the men and women who work along the roadway are real people with families that they want to go home safe to each day. New York Move Over Law requires drivers to be alert, slow down and safely move over for all stopped vehicles on the side of the road. There is no reason for endangering lives. New York State Police continue to investigate the crash, and we will share additional information as it becomes available.” https://lnkd.in/eiqur-xb

The Thruway Authority is operating with a heavy heart after the death of one of our colleagues in Silver Creek in our Buffalo Division. Our Maintenance employees embody the heart and soul of this organization, often risking their lives to ensure the safety of all drivers. This is the second fatality involving a Thruway maintenance worker this year and it is a serious reminder to SLOW DOWN, safely MOVE OVER and BE ALERT for all vehicles stopped on the side of the road.
