Sustainability Series: Cascara Coffee Cherries 🍒 📣 What is Cascara? Cascara cherries are the dried fruits of the coffee plant, specifically the outer cherry-like skin that surrounds the coffee beans. When you think of coffee, you're probably picturing the roasted beans used to brew your cup. Before those beans are extracted from the coffee cherry, the cherry itself includes a fleshy outer layer. 📣 How can you use Cascara? Harvesting cascara cherries is the first step in coffee production. Cascara fruit is separated from the coffee bean and not thrown away! They are then dried, and you can steep them as an herbal tea! 📣 What does it taste like? Cascara’s flavor profile is sweet and fruity with notes that can include flavors like cherry, raisin, hibiscus and tamarind.
