TIES recognizes the importance of school design and STEM professional development for all teachers as the basis to improve and advance the character of science, technology, engineering and mathematics teaching for students regardless of grade level. TIES understands the need to shift the teaching of STEM education to focus less on fragmented and isolated bits of discrete information and more on scientific understanding and reasoning. STEM education is trans-disciplinary in nature offering students the ability to use project-based learning to address real-world issues that affect their family, their community and their world. TIES works with regional and state economic development organizations to fuel STEM education curriculum and instructional program development for the benefit of all. Our students are digital natives and TIES works to ensure that the “Technology and Engineering” in STEM drive the relevance of the “Science and Mathematics.”

Thrilled to share the success of the AI Academy at Irvington! From March to June 2024, students explored AI and emerging technologies through a blend of theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience. The grand finale was a testament to their creativity and collaboration, featuring Glowforge creations and Photon robots. This program has truly inspired our young innovators to tackle future challenges in AI and STEM fields. Read all about it in "The AI Academy: A Journey of Innovation and Inspiration," a blog written by our very own Taryn Federico. https://lnkd.in/eijMEGwr

Another great day at Naval Surface Warfare Center Carderock Division (NSWCCD) STEM bootcamp! TIES Teaching Institute for Excellence in STEM Office of Naval Research #BEST Dr. Katherine Bihr Toby Ratcliffe Bothel Jason Porter Charlotte George Ashlee Floyd #JeffCampana DoD STEM #DSEC One important change this year from last is that the building we work in was recently renamed to honor a civilian naval engineer-the Raye Montague Center for Maritime Technology. This amazing Naval “Hidden Figures” story shares that Raye Montague became the first person to design a ship using a computer. During the Vietnam War, President Nixon requested new ships in record time. When asked to generate a design in less than two months, Raye used CASDAC to complete a design of the Oliver Hazard Perry-Class frigate in only 18 hours and 26 minutes! As these amazing students from DMV area schools develop soldering, coding and building skills on their Sea Glides maybe one of them is a future Raye Montague. Very excited for day 3!

Dr. James L. Moore III, director of the National Science Foundation’s Directorate for STEM Education, will be joining the Chicago convening of the STEM Learning Ecosystems Community of Practice. Dr. Moore, who has been in regular conversation with the leadership of the STEM Learning Ecosystems, spoke during a January 2024 webinar and said: "We're at a crossroads where we must double down on investments in domestic populations lacking support for STEM careers, especially in underserved communities." In accepting the invitation to participate in the Chicago convening, titled “Access in Action,” Dr. Moore said he looks forward to rolling up his sleeves and involving members of his team in developing and designing solutions that will offer support to the “missing millions” of learners who are kept out of STEM because of systemic barriers. Stay tuned for more information about his address, and register for the convening today! https://lnkd.in/e4M4yaBW
