About us

TCAA is the national voice of BAC-signatory ceramic tile/stone contractors. Our mission is to promote industry excellence and ensure that every installation is done to the highest standards. We support this mission by education, training, advocacy and credentialing. The TCAA Trowel of Excellence certification is recognized by the TCNA Handbook and MasterSpec as evidence of a contractor's qualifications and requires lead installers to hold an Advanced Certification for Tile Installers (ACT) in at least one skill area. TCAA is committed to the future and betterment of the ceramic tile industry. We believe that future lies in the utilization of highly skilled union craftworkers. We seek to increase our members' market share by educating architects, designers, general contractors and the public on the superiority and value of this craftsmanship and offer tangible evidence through our Trowel of Excellence certification. Only TCAA tile contractors who meet stringent qualifications criteria are eligible to receive the Trowel of Excellence. Our members benefit from superior training, education and apprenticeship programs. This is accomplished through TCAA's partnership with the International Masonry Institute, the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers, and this industry's leading manufacturers. With voting seats on the Tile Council of North America (TCNA) Handbook and ANSI A108 committees, TCAA plays an important role in the development and review of technical standards. The input we provide helps to ensure that industry standards and specifications reflect best practices in the installation of tile products. TCAA’s quarterly publication, “9300 Contractor”, goes out to an audience of 7,000± architects, designers & contractors showcasing outstanding installation projects, providing a venue for manufacturers to advertise, and information on technical, business and labor issues that impact those who specify tile and those who install it.

95%. That’s the minimum acceptable area of mortar coverage required underneath tile in a wet area like a shower or swimming pool, according to the ANSI standards for tile installation. There are many variables that affect mortar coverage: Which direction is the mortar spread? What size notched trowel is used? Is the tile sufficiently back-buttered? What techniques are used to embed the tile once it’s laid in place? All these matter. Union tile setters and finishers are trained to install tile the correct way according to ANSI standards, TCNA guidelines, manufacturers’ instructions, and project requirements. Training matters. Did you know that many electrical risks are related to the inappropriate use of extension cords? When multiple cords are connected, they can easily overdraw electricity from the circuits, causing the wires to heat up and potentially result in a fire. 🔥🔌Set aside time to identify hazards in your workplace. Periodically inspect cords so they stay in good working condition. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gnQV2wZB #SafeandSoundAtWork #ElectricalSafety

What a great experience at Coverings this week in Atlanta with our industry partners Tile Contractors' Association of America (TCAA). We delivered a panel presentation on Tile Essentials 101, demonstrated skilled installation of tile with the Advanced Certifications for Tile Installers (ACT) mockups, participated in important ANSI and other technical committee meetings, learned about new and interesting products, reconnected and made tons of new friends, and picked up some wristbands along the way! I’m proud to be a part of North America’s largest tile and stone conference. #Tile #Coverings24 #Coverings #WhyTile Why Tile

In my previous post entitled “No Birdbaths" ( https://lnkd.in/g88q5Kx8 ), I talked about the 1/4 inch per foot* slope required of floors in wet areas like showers and pool decks, highlighting the importance of qualified tile installers in the successful delivery of compliant floors. But just how do these installers achieve such precise slopes? There are a couple techniques commonly used to achieve slope in floors. Perhaps the simplest is the use of a prefabricated underlayment board manufactured with the prescribed slope. These devices work well for smaller standard square or rectangular showers that have a single drain in the center. These boards still need to be waterproofed and tightly tied into the rest of the shower assembly. The classic method, and perhaps most suitable for complex shower configurations or larger areas with multiple drains, is to pull, or screed, a thick sand and cement mortar bed, commonly called “mud,” tapering the mortar bed with the required slope to drain. Installing mud floors is a skill taught in the tile apprenticeship program of International Masonry Institute, and it is also a specialty skill area in the industry-wide ACT certification (Advanced Certifications for Tile Installers). No matter what means they use to achieve slope, you can be sure that BAC tile installers are trained and often certified in mud floor installation, and able to provide a floor with positive and continuous slope to drain. *Always follow national and local codes and manufacturers’ recommendations. #Tile #Watertight Why Tile #Slope #Pitch

We’re getting the band back together! Alena, Ryan, and I have served on tile education panels before, and this year Coverings has given us 90 minutes to talk about “Tile Essentials 101: A Comprehensive Guide for Specifiers and Retail Sales Professionals.” If you’re attending Coverings, North America’s largest tile and stone exhibition, in Atlanta April 22-25, check us out. Our class offers an essential roadmap for architects, interior designers, and retail sales professionals delving into the fundamental aspects of tile selection and specification. Understanding the diverse applications of tile – ranging from wet areas, floors, and outdoor spaces to walls, countertops and beyond – is pivotal. Participants will grasp the nuances in tile selection by unraveling installation requirements, with an emphasis on proper grout selection, use of multiple samples and accurate square footage estimations for success. Explore the network of resources available for novices in the field, from human expertise to essential documents, to help facilitate informed decisions and specifications. Discussions will also revolve around optimizing tile selection for any design, while stressing the essential role of qualified labor in ensuring a successful installation, underscoring the significance of skilled professionals in executing your design vision. Visit https://lnkd.in/dE_zFZtQ for more info on our session. Let’s talk wetness. My city, Chicago, gets about 37 inches of rain annually. The rainiest city in the continental US is Mobile, Alabama at 67 inches per year. Hilo, Hawaii gets about 144 inches. But what if I told you there was an environment that gets pelted with 2,500 in. of water per year? Consider a typical residential 3 ft. x 4 ft. shower with a 2.5 gallon per minute shower head. If 2 people take a 10-minute shower each day, that shower floor receives 50 gallons of water per day, which is equivalent to about 7 in. of water pouring on the floor daily, or 2,555 inches per year. The importance of proper design and qualified installers can not be overstated, especially in a fixture as critical as a tiled shower. Union tile setters spend many weeks training on all types of shower installation, everything from substrate preparation to achieving slope, from membrane installation to tying everything into the drain. This video is the first in a series of posts addressing watertight tile installations taken from the recent webinar my colleague Dean Moilanen from Noble Company and I presented. And speaking of tile showers, there’s sure to be a vast array of waterproof membranes, drains, and other accessories on display, in addition to tile, at Coverings , North America’s largest tile and stone exhibition, in Atlanta April 22-25. It takes specially trained tile setters to install a specialty product like art glass panels. International Masonry Institute recently hosted a workshop for designers and architects at our suburban Chicago training center, co-sponsored by Italian art glass company SICIS. Designers learned about the evolution of glass as an architectural material from the 19th century to modern times, examining the countless decorative choices and contemporary applications available today. After the classroom session, the designers were treated to a demonstration of uncrating, handling, and cutting a full-size panel led by IMI tile coordinator Mike Spatz and his team of instructors and apprentice tile installers. Attendees also viewed several art glass panels installed throughout the training center. IMI is filling the need for skilled labor in this growing market with our tile training classes in art glass installation. #Tile #ArtGlass #TilePanels #WhyTile
