Given that it’s Opening Day for the Olympics in Paris, we thought we’d highlight a little bit of our work in the historical New Orleans here in the States, specifically the Vieux Carré, often referred to as the French Quarter. It is the oldest neighborhood in New Orleans and Vieux Carré translates to “Old Square” in French, reflecting its layout and historical significance. New Orleans holds a special place in our heart, and in the past we completed an analysis of the lighting in the Vieux Carré / French Quarter, by initially examining an existing block and fifteen façade types that exemplified most of the buildings conditions (the square bordered by Bourbon, Royal, Toulouse, and St. Louis streets) and then expanded it to include six additional blocks that were more eclectic and commercial. We analyzed glare, uniformity, and technology and came back with solutions to stitch together a common thread of lighting in the commercial and residential areas. We then created guidelines specifically recommending quantity, wattage, mounting, angles, alignment, and placement depending on the type of building, its usage, neighbors, and overlapping street lighting. The goal was subtlety, restraint, discretion, harmony, and efficiency.

Congrats to all of the Winthrop Center team members for winning a Green GOOD DESIGN Award from The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies and The Chicago Athenaeum Museum for Architecture and Design (quite a mouthful!). We’re hopeful that this project will move the needle forward by demonstrating that Passive House performance is possible in predominantly glass buildings. Thanks to our many partners on this project, including Suffolk Construction, Steven Winter Associates, DeSimone Consulting Engineering, WSP in the U.S., Lam Partners, Tillotson Design Associates, SOCOTEC USA and more.

Looking back at the interview our founder Suzan Tillotson did for Madame Architect, it was an honor to have her be the first lighting designer interviewed! "I've learned that if you don't take risks, if you don't face the possibility of failure head on, you're throwing away opportunity and the potential for growth." - Suzan Tillotson
Today on #MadameArchitect: For our last feature of the year, and as we enjoy the holiday lighting, Julia Gamolina talks to Suzan Tillotson, founder of Tillotson Design Associates, WBE lighting design consultancy based in New York City. TDA was named Architizer’s A+ Lighting Design Firm in 2021. Suzan was named Lighting Designer of the Year at the 2017 Lighting Design Awards in London and was awarded the International Dark Sky Association’s Lighting Design and Technology Award in 2018. She has lectured at numerous events and universities including Cornell, Dalhousie, and Princeton. In 2022, Suzan was named Louisiana State University’s College of Art & Design Nadine Russell Chair. In her interview, Suzan talks about developing her specific focus and how lighting design affects how people feel in a space, advising those just starting their career to find the courage to take risks: #tillotsondesignassociates #lightingdesign

Thank you for sharing The Perelman Performing Arts Center! The PAC NYC is adorned with a translucent veined marble façade sandwiched between glass. A lightly etched outer surface diffuses the transfer of surrounding exterior light sources, along with custom-designed chandeliers that aim at the assembly from behind, transforming the white cube into a luminous amber box after sunset.
The Perelman Performing Arts Center was completed last year by REX Architecture as the final public element in the World Trade Center masterplan 💛 Check out the full project on ArchDaily 👉 https://bit.ly/3zIxtcF #architecture #photography #building #architect #buildingdesign #newyork Credits: Architects: REX Architecture Photographs: Iwan Baan Acousticians: Threshold Acoustics Structural Engineers: Magnusson Klemencic Associates Structural Consulting Engineers: Silman Lighting Design Consultants: Tillotson Design Associates Construction Managers: Sciame Construction, LLC Project Managers: DBI Consultants Vertical Transportation Consultants: Jenkins & Huntington, Inc Vertical Transportation Consultants Concrete Consultant: Reg Hough Associates, LLC Civil Engineering: Philip Habib and Associates

Winter Park Library and Events Center in Winter Park, Florida. These three remarkable structures featuring grand tilted precast panels exemplify some impressive architectural ingenuity. Over several days, I immersed myself in observing and capturing these buildings from various perspectives, mesmerized by how the sunlight gracefully interacted with their surfaces from dawn to dusk. Photographing this project was a significant highlight of my career, a dream I had since first seeing the renderings. To this day, I still feel that I have not yet fully captured this project to my satisfaction.
