Last Saturday, I had the incredible opportunity to explore one of the most exciting developments in space architecture during my shift as a docent at the The Museum of Flight. One of the many hats I wear is helping to share the wonders of aerospace with visitors, and this time I got to dive into the TESSERAE exhibit, created by the Aurelia Institute. TESSERAE, which stands for Tessellated Electromagnetic Space Structures for the Exploration of Reconfigurable, Adaptive Environments, is a groundbreaking prototype for self-assembling space architecture. Imagine objects designed to autonomously connect and form predetermined patterns using advanced materials and algorithms. The Aurelia Institute is a non-profit R&D lab focused on space architecture, education, and policy, dedicated to building humanity’s future in space for the benefit of life here on Earth. Their mission extends from democratizing access to orbit and advancing microgravity biotech, to enabling offworld heavy industry to support Earth as a garden planet. Since September, the Pavilion, a human-scale installation showcasing Aurelia’s modular architecture, will be on display at the Museum of Flight until January. Talon-A2 is Stratolaunch’s first recoverable autonomous hypersonic testbed designed to repeatedly air launch, fly a hypersonic trajectory, and land on a standard runway. It represents a new era of low-risk, affordable, and routine access to the hypersonic environment. Take a look inside Stratolaunch’s preparation for various aspects of this historic flight, including expanding capabilities of the air launch platform and world’s largest flight aircraft Roc, and verifying Talon-A2’s various subsystems and landing hardware.

This week marks the 100th anniversary of the first around-the-world flight. For people here in the Seattle area there’s a big local connection because the flight began and ended here. Four Douglas World Cruiser airplanes left the under-construction Naval Air Station at Sand Point on April 6, 1924. Two of them returned on September 28, 1924 (the other two airplanes did not complete the journey). That return date is 100 years ago tomorrow. Sand Point was an active airfield until about 1970 and remained a Navy installation until 1995. Today it is Magnuson Park. A statue commemorating the circumnavigation remains on display at the entrance. The Sand Point facility and The Museum of Flight are celebrating the anniversary throughout the weekend. I like the flying display they have planned. Several airplanes will depart Boeing Field and fly over Sand Point. The common theme? Individual airplanes that have also circumnavigated the earth. The original World Cruisers are no longer flying but the list includes a Cessna 210, Long-EZ, Mooney, RV-9, and two Lancairs.  In the event, other airplanes flying this weekend include one of the two remaining airworthy B-29s. This airplane does not come to the Pacific Northwest often so keep your eyes open! NASA Unveils Hydrogen-Hybrid Wing Airliner Concept "...This new concept envisions a large, highly efficient aircraft powered by hydrogen and designed to significantly reduce carbon emissions in long-haul flights. The hybrid-wing design maximizes aerodynamic efficiency while providing ample space to store hydrogen fuel in cryogenic tanks. NASA is exploring how hydrogen propulsion, combined with the unique wing structure, can reduce fuel consumption by 50% compared to current jetliners.
