Looking back at our week in Papua New Guinea, it’s clear that being adaptable was key to the successful delivery of this training. Unpredictable weather, high altitude and a remote location meant that in the words of Drew, "You have to pivot, adjust to conditions, and make it work, no matter what the environment throws at you. You have to remain safe and ensure that you maintain the business standards and thankfully the students were prepared to make that work." Despite the challenges, the receptivity of the participants was undeniable. It was an adventure but we can't wait to go back to work with group 2 later this year!

Whatever the weather, we will find a training solution for you! Adaptability and resilience in unpredictable conditions is essential in flying drones, especially in a tropical climate like Papua New Guinea's. The initial plan to conduct our practical training at Ridge Camp was thwarted by heavy fog, making flying too dangerous. As a pivot, Drew determined an alternative location that was compliant with PNG’s airspace regulations and safety standards. The high-altitude terrain and low cloud cover posed complications requiring meticulous planning around safe take off, drone weight limits, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). Despite the challenges, Drew and his Santos trainees leveraged the unpredictable weather conditions to successfully complete all the training requirements.

We can train clients in Brisbane and Sydney, or we can come to you... Recently our National Sales Manager, Drew travelled to Papua New Guinea to deliver a tailored training program for mining company Santos. Our course was designed to equip their employees with the skills to operate drones up to 10kg to assist with inspections, monitoring and safely accessing difficult locations. This ensures their team of operators are capable of deploying drone technology in complex environments, helping Santos to enhance their operational efficiency. But unfortunately, we can't plan the weather! ☁️ We'll share more of Drew's story tomorrow, stay tuned.

We had an incredible time last month at the 2024 Aeromed Conference in Christchurch, NZ, hosted by the Aeromedical Society of Australasia! This annual event is all about sharing knowledge and connecting with professionals from Australia and New Zealand’s air medical transport sector. The Toll Aviation stand showcased our latest training and operations capabilities, plus a chocolate skill-tester machine and free makeup sessions which were a hit with guests! We were also a proud supporter of the Welcome Reception which featured an address by our Toll Aviation GM, Colin Gunn. Another special highlight was our Women in Aviation panel presentation, facilitated by Diane Tremain, GM of The ACE Training Centre where our Sydney courses are held. A panel of female leaders in aviation, including our Head of Aviation Projects, Yvette Lutze, explored career progression, mentorship, and policies—everything from equipment needs to maternity leave. It was inspiring to hear each panellist’s unique journey and vision for a more inclusive future in aviation.

Why do we talk so much about 'drone approvals' in our industry? In Australia, drone approvals refer to the process regulated by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) that grants permission for individuals and organisations to operate drones for commercial or specific recreational purposes. These approvals are important for several reasons: 1. They help ensure the safety of the airspace by preventing accidents, such as collisions with manned aircraft. 2. They protect public privacy by ensuring that drone operations comply with relevant laws and regulations. 3. The approval process fosters accountability among operators, encouraging responsible use of drones. By establishing clear guidelines and requirements, drone approvals support the growth of the drone industry in Australia while prioritising safety and enabling innovations in fields like agriculture, delivery, and emergency response.

This month we caught up with our Business Manager Lesley Condon, one of the driving forces behind Toll Uncrewed Systems - and recently the first woman to launch and recover a V-BAT drone in Australia! 8 years ago whilst running a fixed wing flying school, her company made a pivot into drones and she never looked back. Now at Toll Uncrewed Systems she has her sights set on becoming the largest drone training and operations provider in Australia and New Zealand. If a career in drones is on your radar, Lesley has this advice for you: “Imagine where this industry will be in 5 years and aim high. Working in the uncrewed industry means being at the forefront of technology advancements. Women entering this field can contribute to innovations, operations, engineering, data analysis and more and the industry needs a diverse perspective to solve complex problems.” Nothing stands still in the uncrewed space, and now is the perfect time to make that career leap.
