How We Shifted The Convo From Diverse Stock Photography To Diverse Datasets ! We are committed to aligning with companies to help make their products more inclusive in a variety of image driven ways. Over the last few years we've partnered with the Product Inclusion & Equity plus Responsible Innovation teams at Google to provide thousands of images of people from historically marginalized backgrounds in order to have representative data that reflects the experiences and needs of all people who use Google products. "When products are not built using diverse and representative data, they can end up being less useful for everyone. So we’ve been retraining some of our earlier machine learning models with more inclusive datasets: sets of data we use to build our hardware and software products," Sydney Coleman, Product Inclusion & Equity Team Member shared in the below article regarding our partnership. In working together, Google was able to use more inclusive datasets to create Real Tone on Google Pixel, which represents skin tones authentically and beautifully for all users. The models represented across the gender spectrum, models with darker skin tones, and models with disabilities (and people who represent the intersectionalities of these identities). Today is our official 7 year launch anniversary! To honor that, we're looking back on some of our favorite custom photo projects. Today, we're highlighting our work with Nike. TONL has teamed up with Nike countless times as they felt strongly about helping provide diverse imagery in our ‘Tone’ Collection. Together we’ve told unique stories connected to sports with the purpose of showcasing  people in historically marginalized groups.  One of our favorite photo projects spotlighted FC Harlem and other young women in soccer and their special relationships with their coaches. We’re continuing a walk down memory lane this week as we revisit some of our favorite photo projects over the last 7 years to honor our launch anniversary! Today, we’re highlighting our custom photo project with Google through their Chromebook sector, lead by Florian Koenigsberger back in 2018. TONL teamed up with Google with the purpose of showcasing unique entrepreneurial ventures of people of color while using the Acer Chromebook 15 CB515-1HT and the Samsung Chromebook Pro. We depicted 12 subjects through imagery, telling most of their stories via a series of TONL Narratives. Entrepreneurial ventures came in the form of designers, a yoga instructor, a barber, a dermatologist, a hairstylist, an author and photo researcher, a model and a fashion designer, to name a few. The direct impact of these images was allowing people to see through stock photography the wide array of possible business ventures someone in a historically marginalized group can be a part of and successfully. The release of the 100 images selected became the inaugural images to rollout our Technology Collection that year. All week we’ll be revisiting some of our favorite photo projects over the last 7 years to honor our launch anniversary! Today, we’re highlighting our very first custom photo project with Urban Indian Health Institute back in 2017. TONL teamed up with Abigail Echo-Hawk from UIHI with the purpose of more accurately depicting the American Indian/Alaska Native community in imagery through our collab titled “We Exist”. We loved how this photo project spoke directly to why we started TONL: better representation in imagery and storytelling of historically marginalized groups in media and advertising.
