Check out Senior Planner Mia Candy's highlights (and photos) from the Safe Routes to School National Conference! 👇
Day 1 of the Safe Routes Partnership National Conference off to a strong start! Highlights: ⛔ Powerful keynote presentation by Wes Marshall, PhD, PE author of Killed by a Traffic Engineer. Ideas that I'll be holding onto after the conference: 1) We can't just "declare" vision zero and hope things will change 2) In our current street design, speeding is a feature, not a bug, and 3) We can't keep blaming "human error" when our streets encourage generate unsafe behaviors. 🏫 One of my Toole Design Group colleagues, Sara Schooley presented on creative High School programs alongside the ONLY student presenting at the conference. 5 Lessons: 1) Customize programming (no one-size fits all for high schools), 2) Think about motivation (what do high school students care about?), 3) Communicate with STUDENTS (parents are not your target audience), 4) Respect independence, and 5) Don't demonize driving or drivers (The identity factors tied up in getting you license in high school are no joke). 🍁 Getting to enjoy the beautiful fall weather in Colorado while biking on world class trails and shared use paths, all integrated seamlessly with the local transit system. 🚲 🛴 🧪 Evening reception at the Fort Collins Museum of Discovery. (Not pictured because I was too busy chatting to fun SRTS folks and exploring the exhibits to take photos 🤓)

Thank you to everyone who joined us in Boston last week to celebrate all the things. What a great night spent together! 💗
I want to send out a BIG thank you to everyone who attended our Open House/Retirement Party for Nick Jackson. It was a great night filled with laughter, speeches and a few tears as we celebrated Nick's amazing career and our 15 years together in Boston. We told the story of the beginning of our Boston office, which has gone from a scrappy start up to a powerhouse team of over 40 engineers, planners, and landscape architects. Our new office is on Tremont St., overlooking the Boston Common - come by and visit sometime! Jason DeGray, Erica Guidoboni, P.E., Michelle Danila, Bill Schultheiss, RJ Eldridge, Karen Fitzgerald, Said Yahya, P.E., Preston Buehrer, Stephanie Weyer, PLA (and a big thanks to Sara Rauwolf, PE for her excellent photography of the event!)

"Streets that function as seams, not barriers." 🪡 YES! A big thank you to everyone who joined us during the week-long charrette in the City of Moses Lake. To learn more about the project, read Seattle Office Director Dustin DeKoekkoek's post below:
It was an incredible week with this team in Moses Lake. We spent the first two days hearing from the community about their values and helping develop a vision for their city. We spent the next two days reimagining their transportation system as something that contributes to and supports their vision. A transportation system that mends their city together, instead of separating. Streets that function as seams, not barriers. The Stratford Road and SR-17 interchange, our primary focus area, currently doesn’t work well for any users, especially the most vulnerable. We came away with some big ideas on how to improve it and the rest of the network and look forward to working with the city and stakeholders to develop some implementable solutions. Big thanks to the charrette team of Ian Lockwood, PE and Derek Magee from Toole Design Group, Brooklyn Holton with Firm Foundations Community Consulting, Brent Powell with Perteet Inc. and R. Levi Bisnett, PLS with the City of Moses Lake.

This week, Strong Towns released the Beyond Blame report on how cities can take the lead in reducing crashes. The report offers six key recommendations, from establishing Crash Response Teams to implementing quick-build safety interventions. For a deeper dive, read the Beyond Blame report here: https://lnkd.in/eP-eY-Cs Our Civil Engineering Practice Director Melany Alliston, PE sat down with the Strong Towns Podcast to further discuss the report and how engineers can prioritize safety in street design. Catch the full conversation here or on all podcast apps: https://lnkd.in/enXukab6
From the report "Beyond Blame: How Cities Can Learn From Crashes To Create Safer Streets Today,” here are six recommendations for things cities can do to prevent traffic crashes: 1. Make safety a core organizational responsibility. 2. Establish a Crash Response Team. 3. Establish a Crash Analysis Studio. 4. Use temporary traffic control devices for quick safety responses. 5. Update local street standards to priority safety instead of traffic speed. 6. Conduct bike and walk audits for all projects.
