These incentives can include tax breaks, reduced sales tax rates, and access to grants and other financial assistance programs. The goal of a #UEZ is to revitalize and stimulate #economicdevelopment in urban areas that have experienced economic decline or stagnation. Paris bucked a trend during the 2024 Summer Olympics, opting to utilize existing venues and invest in new infrastructure instead of committing billions of dollars to new build stadiums that may never be used again. 🏟 Often, it's after the closing ceremony that these new venues fall into disuse and eventually disrepair, creating ghost villages throughout the host city. Based on the decisions that Paris made leading up to the #Olympics, we hope to see an outcome similar to what #Munich did with their #Olympiapark following the 1972 Summer Games. Topology Planner II Justin Cutroneo, AICP was in Germany last year and had a chance to visit Olympiapark München, which was originally constructed for the 1972 Olympics, but now serves as a venue for cultural, social, and religious events. Did you know that during several #Olympics in the first half of the 20th century, medals were awarded for town planning?🥇🥈🥉 It's true! Baron Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of the modern #OlympicGames, believed art and architecture were a vital component for his vision and the first four decades of the modern Games saw runners and swimmers competing alongside authors and urban planners. Have Europeans figured out the elusive "missing middle housing"? At the very least they can teach us a thing or two about density, neighborhood scale, and historical context... While he was exploring Tallinn, Estonia earlier this year, one of our resident globetrotters, Topology Principal Christopher Colley, fell in love with the many varieties of small apartment buildings throughout the city. 🏘 Two lessons we can take away from this are that (1) the Estonians have done an excellent job of designing newer buildings that complement their historic surroundings and (2) we don't build nearly enough of this type of housing in the United States.
