PSA: 🚨 Update Tor Browsers now! On March 14, 2025, a Mozilla root certificate used for add-ons verification will expire, potentially disabling extensions like NoScript or breaking features such as the Security Slider on Tor Browser versions older than 13.5.11 legacy. To avoid issues and security risks, update now to 14.0.7 stable or 13.5.13 legacy. https://lnkd.in/gvCvqqFu

Privacy and freedom online
About us
The Tor Project is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. We develop free and open source software for privacy and freedom online, protecting people from tracking, surveillance, and censorship. The Tor Project’s mission is to advance human rights and freedoms by creating and deploying free and open source anonymity and privacy technologies, support their unrestricted availability and use, and further their scientific and popular understanding. Tor protects you by bouncing your communications around a distributed network of relays run by volunteers worldwide: it prevents somebody watching your internet connection from learning what sites you visit and it prevents the sites you visit from learning your physical location. Tor works with many of your existing applications, including web browsers, instant messaging clients, remote login, and other applications based on the TCP protocol. The easiest way to use Tor is in Tor Browser, which adds additional privacy protections to your browsing experience. Tor Browser protects against cross-site tracking with first-party isolation and browser fingerprinting. Using Tor can also help you access an open web if you're in a part of the world or on a network where sites are blocked.

It's #WorldDayAgainstCyberCensorship, a great moment to reflect on how the "unprecedented access to data on citizens has fueled societal polarization, misinformation and disinformation, and online harms. Lack of access to verified, truthful information, the targeting of journalists and their sources to impede the production of truthful news, and online censorship that blocks specific sites and stops people from accessing good information have become rampant. Tor's community-driven model is one of the last strongholds against these threats, offering a collective defense of the open web." 🌉 It's been a year since we launched WebTunnel bridges and the Tor community has successfully scaled WebTunnel bridges from 60 to over 300, surpassing the initial goal of 200 new deployments. 📖 https://lnkd.in/gfgZpq9f

I want to send a big thank you for everyone involved in organizing RightsCon 2025 in Taipei. This year edition was especial in many ways. A big congrats to Alejandro Mayoral Banos, PhD and how him and his team organized the opening ceremony, that set the tone for the event. The Tor Project co-hosted a satellite event with Open Culture Foundation on Sunday where we trained over 40 people on Tor Browser and Tails. We had a big team in Taipei and all of us participated in different sessions during the week as well. It was great to meet old and new friends. At meetings and discussions during sessions, and in the corridors, I saw how people were eager to analyze together the current situation we are living in the world and organize for it. I came back to Brazil fully energized to continue the work. Thanks to everyone that I interact with, for sharing your knowledge, thoughts and ideas.

Thanks Kathleen Chu 🕊️for inviting us to talk about the importance of online privacy, how Tor is making a real difference in people's lives, and how decentralization can empower users to take control of their data.
What does privacy mean to you? To me, it's as basic as clothing—it protects us from being exposed. Just like we wouldn't walk around naked, our digital lives need that same protection. As we spend more time online in recent decades, digital privacy has become essential for safeguarding our information. Privacy is a fundamental human right and a matter of human dignity, and privacy technology ensures that those who seek our private information find it difficult to obtain what they want. Join me for this enlightening conversation with Pavel Zoneff from The Tor Project in the latest episode of Progress Reimagined about online privacy and protection yourself. You can listen to this episode on Substack, YouTube, or any platform where you get your podcasts. #PrivacyTech #TorProject #ProgressReimagined #HumanRights #Onlinesafety #OnlinePrivacy

"Tor is safer because it serves everyone—from human rights defenders to military personnel, and everybody in between. "You can’t have an anonymity system only for cancer survivors, or everybody can guess why you’re using it." 🔖 Read the full interview with Roger Dingledine on the CloudFest blog: https://lnkd.in/grMcunJe

Today we celebrate our combined efforts of raising $816,141.70 this 2024 year-end fundraising campaign. THANK YOU to our community for ensuring people worldwide are able to exercise their right to speak, browse, and search with freedom and privacy. Special thanks to Power Up Privacy for matching $300k to help us get here. Whether you donated, shared the campaign, promoted volunteer efforts, attended an event, or joined our newsletter, we couldn't have achieved this success without the collective efforts of the Tor community. https://lnkd.in/gKk5iag4

Thank you Hush Line!
We made a small but meaningful update to Hush Line today - when you access the app using our Onion Service, the banner at the top of the screen will give feedback about your connection status with a link to support The Tor Project. (Good news is you don't have to go to the app using Tor Browser just to find the link: https://lnkd.in/eFr6VQew) Tor is a critical piece of infrastructure for internet users around the world, and if you can support them, please do.
