As demand for high-energy batteries grows, so does the need for safe testing. The global market for batteries is forecast to reach $424 billion by 2030 (Statista). That’s a near 4x jump on the $112 billion in 2021. Electric Vehicles are the primary driver. At TotalShield, we’re designing more custom battery testing enclosures to withstand the fiery failure hazards associated with lithium-ion systems. We use Polycarbonate panels for our bespoke testing enclosures. And we’re always asked: “How fireproof is it?” Our response is a hallmark of engineering expertise: “Well, it depends.” So, one of our engineers, Tanner Metzko, recently conducted in-house testing. • A butane torch placed 1 inch from a 0.75 inch polycarbonate sheet. • It survived 8 minutes of direct exposure to the flame (1200°F) • Only the first 0.125 inch layer melted (The remaining layers stayed intact, showcasing polycarbonate's remarkable fire resistance) Add to this its exceptional impact strength, and transparency for observation, polycarbonate is THE go-to material for advanced battery testing enclosures. At TotalShield, our custom designs prioritize each client’s unique needs. Our enclosures offer 360-degree visibility and accessibility, making it easy to monitor and conduct your battery testing. The sacrificial panel design allows for quick and cost-effective replacement of damaged sections without compromising the entire structure. And for walk-in shield rooms, we integrate fire suppression systems into the ceiling. Is your company testing high-energy battery systems? Let’s talk! (I've linked Tanner's full blog in the comments)

Polycarbonate strength Vs. steel: Which one is better? As we always say, it depends! Polycarbonate is a powerhouse material with impressive benefits: 💪 Strength: 200 times stronger than steel by weight, withstanding blasts over 900 psi. 🔄 Flexibility: Bounces back to its original shape, dissipating impact energy. 🔍 Transparency: Lightweight and transparent, allowing safe monitoring of machinery. But it’s not without limits. Polycarbonate doesn’t perform well when bolted or drilled. That’s why our proprietary framing system: ✅ Holds panels securely in a continuous gasketed channel—no rigid pinning or pinching. 🔧 Includes steel access panels where drilling is needed, maintaining the enclosure’s integrity. With our shielding solutions, you get the best of both worlds—polycarbonate’s strength and steel’s durability 🛡️
