The Town of Wake Forest and several local veterans’ organizations concluded this year’s series of monthly flag-raising ceremonies on Monday, Oct. 7, at 11 a.m., in Town Hall’s Centennial Plaza. The 58th Wake Forest Memorial Flag-Raising Ceremony honored Homer Akin who served our nation in the US Army. Family members and friends of the Akin family participated in the ceremony, which included patriotic songs, special remarks, a memorial wreath laying, and the ceremonial flag-raising. Photographs and other remembrances of Akin were displayed in Centennial Plaza during the ceremony, then in the Town Hall lobby through the end of the month. As part of the October 7 service, the Wake Forest Fire Department Honor Guard raised the American flag and the US Army service flag in recognition of the military branch in which Akin served. Both flags will fly in Centennial Plaza throughout October. The American flag will then be presented to the Akin family at the next flag-raising ceremony on April 7, 2025. Presented by the Town of Wake Forest and several local veterans’ organizations to honor the sacrifices of deceased Wake Forest veterans and their families, memorial flag-raising ceremonies are scheduled in Centennial Plaza at 11 a.m. - typically on the first Monday of each month from April through October. This month’s service is on the second Monday due to the Independence Day holiday. The services are provided at no cost and intended solely to honor departed veterans and their families.
