This is a great article. I don't trust Google and neither should you. GA4 is powerful and important, but should not be your only source for your analytics. There are technical reasons for inaccurate reporting on GA4 dashboards (as outlined below), but I also don't trust Google's analytics because the opportunity to fudge them for business reasons (keeping your ad dollars and platform use) is too great. No one is really questioning Google's policies on this in a robust way, and Meta is already fighting suits claiming it over-reported traffic to keep bilking advertisers. Often, I'll look at traffic data from a third-party crawler like Ahrefs, and the organic traffic will be lower than reported in GA. Conversely, KeyWordSurfer plugin gives a different general monthly UV number for public domains. Looking at these three together gives you the most accurate picture of your site's digital footprint.
Ever wonder how accurate GA4 is? You're about to to find out... By comparing conversions recorded in databases to "key events" recorded in GA4, we calculated how much data is missing from Google Analytics. We also compared traffic recorded in GA4 to traffic in Plausible Analytics, a cookie-less analytics tool. So how accurate is Google Analytucs? It depends on if you use a cookie consent banner. • GA4 underreports traffic by 11% for sites without cookie consent banners • GA4 underreports traffic by 20% for sites with cookie consent banners This brings up another important question... So what?? I've added a little video where I make the case that it doesn't really matter. Watch and you'll see me do a tiny bit of extremely useful analysis. While watching, ask yourself if more accurate data would really make a difference. But if you're worried about the accuracy of the data in your GA4 account, you can check the levels of underreporting yourself. This post explains how. So now you know. Please note that our analysis was of 33 GA4 accounts with mostly US visitors. Geographic differences mean privacy law differences, which mean accuracy differences. So we compared accuracy when visitors did and didn't see the consent banner. The difference is huge. Thank you to our expert contributors!
