👋🏽 You just created a new team, or joined a new department. And you have never met your colleagues. How do you go about creating a stellar virtual team? Where you enjoy coming to work... 🌍 ? From our experience, working together virtually and fostering your team’s success requires a VERY intentional effort. Here are a few key strategies: 🎯 Prioritize Meeting in Person as soon as possible. If feasible, try to connect in person asap, and focus on connection building rather than content for your first get-together. If feasible, make it a habit to have occasional in-person meetings from there onwards, so that you can deepen relationships and reinforce team cohesion. These face-to-face interactions create a stronger foundation for times when your team faces the first challenge. And the challenge will come sooner than later, especially, if you are open and honest with one another. 🎯 Cultivate Psychological Safety: Ensure every team member feels safe to share ideas, voice concerns, and take risks without fear of judgment. Its a prerequisite for a team’s success, not optional. A psychologically safe environment fosters innovation and engagement, and makes teams go beyond the expected 🎯 Create Opportunities for bonding online: Encourage informal virtual gatherings or team-building activities to strengthen connections. Even if it feels superfluous, or takes some extra effort. Combine it with a “real” activity, like taking a cooking class together remotely. Together, these strategies help virtual teams thrive by building trust, connection, and a culture where everyone feels valued and respected, and safe to be themselves.
