NEWS: Northeastern University Constructs Roux Institute Campus in Portland -- Northeastern University is constructing a permanent campus for the The Roux Institute at Northeastern University in Portland, Maine. Designed by CambridgeSeven, the $500 million project will feature the 245,000-sf Alfond Center, a vibrant hub for learning, research, and collaboration. The six-story facility will accommodate programs in artificial intelligence, computer and data sciences, digital engineering, life sciences, and medicine. Computational academic spaces, wet labs, and active learning classrooms will be arranged around a central gathering area with lecture, conference, and meeting venues. Targeting net-zero carbon emissions, the structure will be fully electric, drawing power for heating and cooling systems from geothermal wells. A climate-adaptive façade will improve energy efficiency, and the selection of local, low-carbon materials will reduce the environmental impact of construction. A three-story section integrating mass timber components will be covered by a 12,000-sf rooftop garden. Built on the site of the B&M Baked Beans plant, the campus will also offer a 610-car parking garage, a childcare center, and public green spaces. Adjacent to the Alfond Center, a 58,000-sf former factory will be renovated to serve as a business incubator. Consigli Construction Co., Inc. is the general contractor, with Thornton Tomasetti as structural and sustainability engineer and HERA Laboratory Planners as lab design consultant. Ground was broken in September of 2024 and completion is expected in fall of 2027. #AdaptiveReuse #Collaboration #EnergyUseReduction #Sustainability #HigherEducation #BusinessIncubator #ConferenceRoom #EducationLectureOrSeminarHall #EducationLifeSciences #Engineering #LaboratoryDryAndWet

NEWS: UChicago Medicine Builds AbbVie Foundation Cancer Pavilion -- University of Chicago Medicine is constructing the AbbVie Foundation Cancer Pavilion to catalyze high-impact research programs and reimagine the spectrum of patient care. CannonDesign is partnering with Yazdani Studio of CannonDesign and Blue Cottage on the $815 million project, which will be the first freestanding structure in Illinois dedicated solely to cancer treatment and research. Teams of clinicians, investigators, and physician-scientists will come together to optimize patient outcomes. As well as addressing regional health disparities, the 575,000-sf facility will foster a culture of immersive collaboration within the academic health system and ensure adaptability to future changes in technology and service delivery models. The building will provide 80 inpatient beds, including 64 medical-surgical and 16 ICU beds, and 90 rooms for outpatient exams and consultations. An urgent care hub with enhanced biosafety protocols will enable immunocompromised patients to be rapidly assessed and treated while minimizing exposure to potential germs. With private infusion bays grouped by cancer type, the pavilion will also include imaging suites, a prevention and education center, and a dedicated area for clinical trials. The ground floor will serve as a gathering zone for both the University of Chicago campus and the greater Hyde Park community. Standing eight stories above grade, the structure will leverage robust vibration and interference mitigation solutions to protect sensitive MRI instrumentation. A basement level with advanced shielding will accommodate linear accelerator equipment (LINAC) in the future. Targeting LEED Gold, the sustainable development will include four floors of shell space to accommodate growth and flexibility. Elevated pedestrian bridges will connect to the parking garage and existing Center for Care and Discovery. The project team includes Affiliated Engineers, Inc. as MEP engineer, RTM Engineering Consultants as MEP/FP engineer, and Thornton Tomasetti as structural and construction engineer. Turner Construction Company broke ground on the facility in September of 2023 and occupancy is anticipated in 2027. #Collaboration #EnergyUseReduction #Sustainability #AcademicMedical #Biocontainment #Healthcare #HigherEducation #HealthcareAmbulatoryOutpatientClinic #HealthcareCancerCenter #HealthcareImaging #HealthcareInpatientAcuteCare #HealthcareIntensiveCareUnit #HealthcareSurgery #ResearchBiomedical

NEWS: Moderna Completes Construction on Innovation and Technology Centre -- Moderna completed construction on a £150 million complex in the United Kingdom for the discovery and production of mRNA vaccines and therapeutics for COVID-19 and emerging respiratory health threats. Located on the Harwell Campus in Oxfordshire, the Moderna Innovation and Technology Centre (MITC) comprises two 145,000-sf buildings for research, development, and manufacturing. Housing labs for bioanalytical and molecular assays, as well as office spaces, the structure is part of Moderna’s ten-year strategic partnership with the UK government and has the capacity to produce up to 250 million vaccines per year. A drug substance manufacturing unit with next-generation automation technologies is accompanied by an early-stage R&D hub to support clinical trials. Glencar Construction broke ground on the development in April of 2023 and Sisk began interior fit-out in January of 2024. Integrated Project Services acted as the construction manager and engineer. Merit utilized modular prefabrication strategies to create a clinical biomarker lab offsite, meeting a demanding two-year project timeline. #Biomedical #Pharmaceutical #ResearchAndDevelopment #LaboratoryBiomedicalResearch #LaboratoryPharmaceutical #LaboratoryRAndD #LaboratoryWet #Manufacturing #Office
