Our VP Strategy Justin Rerko is leading a session on how to drive more disclosures at IP Counsel Café’s Fall Meeting in NYC next month. Along with Keith Jurek from Grail, Tarianna Stewart, Ph.D. Stewart from NYU Technology Opportunities & Ventures, Michael Turner from Yokogawa, and Jesse Bucholtz from Canon, they’ll be discussing how IP teams can better engage their inventors and business without getting in the way. Of course, AI will be one of the solutions they cover. In the realm of invention harvesting, AI is a powerful tool for simplifying the disclosure process and helping stakeholders get on the same page about new inventions. Our latest whitepaper provides a detailed preview of just how AI does it here: https://lnkd.in/eemZkhGn #intellectualproperty #IPdevelopment #AIforIP
Most IP professionals suspect that AI could help them do their jobs better, but appreciate that AI for IP isn’t as simple as firing up ChatGPT. They’re aware that it’s a powerful tool, but don’t know what it can do when applied to IP. Download this whitepaper to learn the nuances of:

For their breakthroughs in artificial neural networks which paved the way for machine learning and modern AI, John J. Hopfield and Geoffrey E. Hinton were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics today! Reminiscent of how the human brain can access memories based on incomplete information, neural networks were designed to automatically learn from raw data. They provided a step-change improvement in dealing with large amounts of unstructured data like images and text, and are able to perform across a variety of domains such as vision, language processing, and speech recognition. Without them, technologies like Google search, Siri, ChatGPT, and Tradespace wouldn’t be the same. Congrats, Drs. Hopfield and Hinton! “I’ve never had so much email before in my life,” says Dr. Hopfield. Luckily AI can help with that, whether you’re in IP or not.

The value of university IP has always been hard to measure, so when was the last time you stopped to rethink what you know? AI is helping tech transfer offices quantify value in new ways, both with its tracking abilities and by freeing up capacity for humans to pay closer attention to KPIs. Our VP of IP Operations Marcia has written about what this looks like and the possibilities it unlocks. One thing we heard loud and clear from AUTM East and West this month: Startups and spinouts are becoming a more predominant vehicle for commercialization as corporate licensing becomes less common. What does this mean for tech transfer offices? 1. Universities need to develop their ability to identify — and avoid — spinouts that are set up to fail (h/t to Michael Poisel of PCI Ventures and Myron Kassaraba of MassVentures for the info-rich panel) 2. Licensing to spinouts means frontloading diligence that is normally done later, before patent action is taken. Understanding the commercial viability and potential of an idea upfront not only helps universities pick the best partners, but drives better patenting decisions as well. 3. These new and changing demands are a good reason for commercialization teams to take a look at AI. AI-backed platforms like Tradespace automatically lay out a technology’s business cases so teams can focus on getting to know spinout teams and crafting patent strategies. Read our VP of Client Success Marcia's latest IP leader profile — of Bridget Smith from rocket startup Relativity Space. Just as fascinating as her work today is the journey she took to get there!
My conversation with IP leader Bridget Smith from Relativity Space has been one of my favorites to date. Relativity Space is a 3D printed rocket startup that in 2023 launched the biggest 3D printed object to have ever made it to space. Being Relativity Space’s AGC and Director of IP is truly Bridget’s dream job — leading IP at a startup was the sole reason she pursued IP! In my latest blog post, Bridget shares why Relativity Space makes heavy use of trade secrets, two unique aspects to their trade secrets program, and her keys to success in startup IP and as a woman in STEM constantly seeking growth! Read all about it here and be inspired to lead: https://lnkd.in/gMuppGbu #IPleadership #womeninIP #intellectualproperty
