The construction of a new 19-kilometer bridge between Dhubri and Phulbari—expected to be the longest bridge over a river in India—marks a monumental shift in the region’s transportation and trade dynamics. Yet, this development also raises concerns, particularly for Dhubri's local boat traders, who fear that the new bridge could render their traditional livelihoods obsolete. While the bridge may lead to shorter travel times and increased accessibility, it could also shift trade away from river routes, undermining the boat trade that has sustained local families for generations. For Dhubri's development to be truly inclusive, it is crucial to ensure that vulnerable communities like local boat traders are not left behind. And how can this be achieved?
