Railcar pooling refers to a "shared collection" of freight railcars, giving railroads and shippers that participate in the pool access to more assets without directly owning them. This setup allows companies to cut empty miles, lower equipment costs, and keeps supply in sync with demand, ensuring smoother operations during peak and trough times. Examples of railcar pooling arrangements include TTX (for automotive railcars and multilevel flats), and North American Boxcar Pool (NABP) for boxcar pooling.
