The travel industry is booming. Consumers are eager to work with professional travel advisors. But at this critical time, agencies are facing a shortage of consultants. A new survey of our agencies found 30% identified recruiting and hiring advisors as a top challenge. The scarcity of advisors is creating other challenges for agencies. They’re concerned about handling client requests and bookings while short-staffed. They also worry about the mental health of their advisors, specifically exhaustion. Agencies are increasing turning to independent contractors to fill the gap instead of hiring staff advisors. Agencies looking to grow the number of ICs want to add three to four of them, while agencies who want to bring on staff advisors plan to hire only two to three. What are the biggest challenges travel agencies face today? A new survey of our affiliated agencies found competition is their biggest pain point. Competition from suppliers who take direct bookings from consumers was named by 46%. Competition from online travel agencies was cited by 35%. Some agencies are also concerned about economic issues: 30% say the rising cost of travel is a challenge, and 19% are apprehensive about a drop in customer spending.
