🤖 All-In on Tech Efficiencies 💡 Moderators: Kim Snyder, Founder & CEO, KlariVis; Phil Goldfeder, CEO , American Fintech Council Panelists: Jesse Honigberg, EVP, Products and Platforms, Customers Bank; Barb MacLean, SVP, Head of Technology Operations & Implementation, Coastal Community Bank; Courtney Sacchetti, EVP, Chief Financial Officer, Bankwell Financial Group, Inc Barb MacLean made the following observation about a bank’s investment in a core processor during the NEXT Forum’s All-In on Tech Efficiencies session. “When you buy, you essentially become a franchisee (of your core processor), because then you tend to buy [additional solutions]. Start thinking about [your tech company] like a startup: Use [them] for the one thing they’re good at, and stop using them for everything else.” 💡 If you would like more information and a full recap of the NEXT Forum, please click here ➡️ https://lnkd.in/e5PT3qYe #technology #banktech #fintech #bankconferences2024 #communitybanks

🌟 Talent Management Monopoly 🌟 Moderator: Paul Davis, Founder, The Bank Slate Panelists: Flynt Gallagher, President, Compensation Advisors, Newcleus LLC; Brian Love, Head of Banking and FinTech, Travillian; Keith Daly, Principal, Travillian NEXT Forum started with a panel discussion on talent management, specifically compensation, retention, and succession. The panelists identified two HR trends currently impacting the financial services industry: 💼💰🤝 Baby Boomer CEOs are showing reluctance to retire, which is stifling progression-advancement in the financial services industry 🏦👨💻 The needs among fintechs are diverting professionals from banking careers According to Keith Daly, these influences affect banks’ risk and compliance operations. He observed that the “…Chief Technology Officer role is going to be critical,” especially as innovations like AI continue to advance into the financial services industry. M&A was a big topic of conference at our NEXT Forum... here's a few deals that were announced earlier this week:
While Travillian was hosting our NEXT Forum (more on that later), and I was hosting an M&A panel discussion, I missed a few M&A deals: 1) Norwich, NY-based NBT Bancorp Inc. (Parent of NBT Bank) will acquire in-state peer Evans Bank in a $236 million deal. 2) Maine-based Camden National Corp. (Camden National Bank) will acquire NH-based Northway Financial Inc (Northway Bank) in an $86.6 million deal. https://lnkd.in/gZTtne2F

That's a wrap on Travillian's first Next Forum! We had an educational (and fun) day in Atlantic City yesterday capped off by inspiring comments by boxing legend Sugar Ray Leonard (some of Travillian team pictured with Sugar Ray below) - thanks to our terrific sponsors and co-hosts, Newcleus LLC. We heard from many great panelists, but to try and summarize my top three takeaways, I'd start here: 1) Overall sentiment on banks is improved; we've seen a pick-up in M&A, common equity raises, rising valuations, and better investor engagement (albeit off a very low launch point). But it does appear very fragile with the unknown catalyst being the outcome of the election in November. I'd anticipate a rocky couple of months trading wise although M&A pipelines are clearly very busy based on commentary from Stephens, Piper Sandler and Performance Trust Capital Partners. 2) We spent ample time discussing communication silo's housed within banks and how this can be a challenge from an enterprise risk management perspective. The good news is post SVB / First Republic / Signature Bank; CEO's seem to be keenly aware of this and improving internal communications to help better manage interest rate, credit and other compliance risks wholesitically, to name a few. 3) Embedded banking, BaaS, bank partnerships - however you want to classify it - continues to be under regulatory stress but don't count these banks out. Lots of smart bankers, with very thoughtful approaches and talented teams growing in this space and the moat for entry / success in BaaS is the widest I've seen it probably since 2015/2016. Five years from now we will look back and likely view this regulatory cycle as a turning point with many of the "best" players those that persevered in 2024. Quote of the Conference "I'm too old to be buying green bananas" - Johnny Allison from Home Bancshares on M&A. Reach out to Travillian if you want to learn more; great event - we appreciate everyone who came out!

Scott Hildebrand ended his Travillian Next Forum session with a compelling message about deposit-side banking: "Banks need to decide what they want to be in terms of loyalty and trust. "My dad has enormous loyalty and little trust; my 10-year-old daughter has enormous trust and little loyalty. "To gauge your institution on this continuum, ask your interns why they bank where they bank. Chances are, the decision was made because their parents bank where they bank. Or they were given a gift that was meaningful to them, like a free Spotify subscription."

The Travillian Next Form has kicked off with interesting observations from panelist Flynt Gallagher of Newcleus, who notes that Boomer bankers' reluctance to retire is blocking the advancement of newer professionals in the business. "They're stifling advancement," he notes. "The underlings are getting tired of waiting..."
