Last week I attended the National Association of Counties Legislative Conference where we discussed the future of AI in county governments. There are many opportunities but we need to be aware of what it brings, both good and bad. I had a great time meeting and speaking alongside Fred Humphries , Corporate Vice President for U.S. Government Affairs at Microsoft and Wake County Commissioner Shinica Thomas from North Carolina.

I encourage all parents to speak with their pediatricians about early vaccination and see if it’s right for you. This disease threatens the lives of our kids, our community, and our economy. Head to austintexas.gov/measles to learn more.

Earlier this week, I had the honor of joining Travis County Judge Andy Brown and Hon. Shinica Thomas, Commissioner, Wake County, North Carolina for an insightful panel discussion before the National Association of Counties general session. With nearly 500 county leaders in the room, we explored how AI can empower counties to better serve their communities and discussed Microsoft’s State and Local Government AI Roadmap and NACo’s AI Compass—both key resources for counties navigating AI adoption. A major focus of our discussion was the Microsoft-NACo AI Learning Series Partnership and our AI Skills Initiative, which enables counties to create curated learning pathways for their workforce through LinkedIn. Great to see multiple state associations and counties are already rolling out AI trainings for their employees – the momentum is real! Thanks to everyone who made this such a great event!

Measles has made its way to Austin. Thank you to Austin Public Health for keeping us updated. There is only one confirmed case in Austin so far –– a young child. As a parent, my heart goes out to that family. I encourage everyone to get your children vaccinated at the times suggested by your doctor- usually 12-15 months and then 4-6 years, but those times can vary in an emergency. Also- consider asking your doctor if you need a booster if you were born before 1968.
