September is Suicide Prevention Month.. We join millions this month in raising awareness, breaking the stigma, and offering support for those impacted by suicide. At Tree of Life Counseling Center, we believe no one should feel alone in their struggle. 13.2 million Americans reported considering suicide in 2022, and globally, suicide remains the third leading cause of death among 15-29 year-olds. (U.S Dept of Health and Human Services, 2022; World Health Organization, 2024) But together, we can make a difference. 🔍 Know the signs: - Expressions of hopelessness: "I can’t do this anymore," "I feel like a burden." - Behavioral changes: Social withdrawal, mood shifts, loss of interest. - Increased risk-taking: Reckless behavior, substance abuse. - Making final arrangements: Saying goodbye, giving away personal items. 💬 How to support someone: - Start a direct conversation: “Are you thinking about suicide?” works to reduce stigma and demonstrate empathy and concern. - Listen without judgment. - Encourage professional help and follow up. 🌟 Resources: - National Suicide Prevention Lifeline: Dial or text 988. - Crisis Text Line: Text HOME to 741741. - The Trevor Project: For LGBTQ+ youth, text START to 678-678. Every conversation could save a life. Let’s work together to build a more supportive, understanding community. It was enlightening to hear diverse perspectives on how these issues affect individuals’ lives. A key takeaway was the necessity of fostering compassionate support and open dialogue within healthcare teams. Creating environments where everyone feels valued, understood, and informed about these issues is essential. We discussed strategies to promote mental well-being and ensure that those struggling with eating disorders receive the necessary support.
