This makes it appear as though the treetops are “shying away” from each other. The exact reasons for this behaviour are still debated, but some theories suggest it may help reduce the spread of harmful insects or diseases, minimise damage from branches rubbing together in the wind, or optimise light exposure for each tree. This fascinating behaviour creates a striking visual effect in forest canopies. 📸 - u/ButterLustSiren

About us
Known as “The City of Trees,” Charlotte has a wonderful foundation for achieving manageable canopy goals. However, a detailed analysis shows we must take a more aggressive approach to ensure the continued health and well-being of our tree canopy, and we must actively plant thousands of trees to account for growth and development in our city and around the region.

This past Wednesday, volunteers from Crete United helped TreesCharlotte plant 39 trees at Fred Alexander Park! Despite the tough ground conditions, the Maple Season Partner volunteers chipped, shoveled, and pickaxed their way through the soil to plant 9 different tree species. Of these species were small to large maturing buckeye, cherry, oak, and pine. The six-acre West Charlotte park recently underwent renovations as part of Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation’s Equity Project, which targets improvements to disadvantaged areas of the city. In addition to the 39 new trees, the park offers basketball and tennis courts, a picnic shelter, playground, community garden and walking trails. Of the partnership with TreesCharlotte, Crete President of Sustainability Laura Steinbrink commented, “Planting trees is one way Crete United is able to take small steps towards our goal of having a Net Zero Carbon Fleet by 2040. Each tree we plant contributes towards the goal of addressing the environmental impact from our Scope 1 emissions. We appreciate the opportunity to engage our leaders and team members with a planting event with Trees Charlotte.” Visit Fred Alexander Park to check out the newly planted trees!

#DidYouKnow Business districts and shopping centers with a high canopy cover attract more consumers than those with lesser canopy coverage. A recent study showed that consumers respond positively to shopping environments with attractive trees and landscaping. Healthy and well-maintained landscapes with trees send positive messages about the appeal of a business district, the quality of products offered there, and what customer service the shopper can expect. In fact, it was concluded that consumers are willing to pay as much as 11% more for products purchased in landscaped business districts. Trees are an important part of attracting shoppers and visitors! Find this interesting? You can learn more tree facts and sign our pledge to save the city's iconic tree canopy at CharlotteWithoutTrees.org. Added bonus?
