"You should not have to be hungry or eat food that you don't want to eat to make ends meet, to go to school." In a recent article by Harvest Public Media, Northern Illinois University's innovative Edible Campus program was highlighted as an example of how colleges are addressing food insecurity on campus. While these initiatives are a step in the right direction, the challenges of food insecurity on college campuses are far-reaching and complex. Allyson Cornett of Trellis Strategies, who was featured in the article, shared insights from our Student Financial Wellness Survey data. As Allyson emphasized, students from food-insecure households are 43% less likely to graduate, and navigating state and federal assistance programs can be an overwhelming hurdle for busy students. Our brief, "Balancing Act: Understanding the Intersection of Basic Needs and Mental Wellbeing in College," dives deeper into these challenges, offering actionable recommendations to foster holistic student support. A special thank you to Jess Savage for bringing attention to this critical issue. Read our full brief to learn more: https://lnkd.in/gRnSCZhN
