“A Deep And Human Look:” Gwendolyn Brooks’ Annie Allen at 75 – Presentation By Quraysh Ali Lansana and Reading November 20 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm South Dallas Cultural Center 3400 S. Fitzhugh Ave. Dallas, TX 75210 Miss Gwendolyn Brooks offered a voice for Black women in literature in the early 1950’s at a time when Black women characters were relegated to maids and nannies. Annie Allen, her second book of poetry, is the groundbreaking work which made her the first Black person to win the Pulitzer Prize in any category. These poems introduce you to Annie Allen and her community as she grows from childhood to womanhood and is faced with poverty, despair, racial discrimination, war and, somehow, hope. October 2024 marks the 75th anniversary of Annie Allen. Lansana will share stories and anecdotes from ten years with Miss Brooks as her last protégé. https://buff.ly/3zhQByq

https://buff.ly/3Ax1CMA The Musicality of Language: Poetry Across Genres Wednesdays: September 11th, 18th, 25th, and October 2nd 7:00pm - 9:00 pm in person at OSU-Tulsa. "Art hurts. Art urges voyages - and it is easier to stay at home." Gwendolyn Brooks Whether a print culture poet, spoken word/performance poet or rapper/emcee, a versatile command of language is the most important element of your craft. This workshop will explore a variety of modes and exercises to help writers enhance their tool kits in writing, revision and new approaches. Great ideas often emanate from unusual sources, from pop culture to old encyclopedias. We will explore unorthodox, as well as traditional, research methods to disrupt and challenge your normal, in an effort to inspire fresh ideas. Exploration of the balance of message and craft, and when & how & why to disrupt that balance, will be addressed. Athletes stretch. Writers also must stretch. If writers don’t continuously challenge themselves, whether it’s a thematic challenge or a craft challenge, we write the same poem repeatedly. Learn more about instructor Quraysh Ali Lansana and how to sign up for this workshop at https://buff.ly/3ANQDyn.

It's Election Day for voters across the state! Voters head to the polls for the June 18 Primary Election. The polls are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Voters are reminded that Oklahoma has modified closed primaries, so not every voter in every precinct will have an election. In order to vote in party's primary election, you must be a registered voter of that party. However, state law provides all recognized parties the opportunity to open its primary elections to Independents. For the 2024-2025 election years, the Democratic Party has opened its primaries to registered Independents. The Republican and Libertarian parties have chosen to keep their primaries closed. Independent voters wishing to vote a Democratic ballot should let the poll worker know when they check in at their polling place. More information about primary elections is available on the State Election Board website. As a reminder, there are local elections on the ballot in some precincts. All voters, regardless of party affiliation, may participate in nonpartisan elections.
