About us
The Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS) is responsible for investing funds under its stewardship and for delivering benefits to members as authorized by the Texas Legislature. Our mission is to improve the retirement security of Texas educators by prudently investing and managing trust assets and delivering benefits that make a positive difference in members’ lives. TRS is a defined benefit plan, with retirement benefits determined by a pre-established formula. The trust fund is sustained principally by three sources-contributions by members during their working careers, contributions by the state, and investment revenues. TRS was founded more than 85 years ago and has $200 billion in assets, making it the largest public retirement system in Texas in both membership and assets. It is the 6th largest public pension plan in the U.S. and is among the 20th largest in the world. The agency serves nearly 1.9 million people, of which over 1 million are public and higher education members and over 400,000 are retirement recipients and beneficiaries. Department Spotlight: Providing a peek into some of the outstanding work done by the EPM Team in FY2024. Enterprise Program Management (EPM) collaborates with stakeholders to provide support and resources to the TRS governance bodies. They identify proposed projects and programs that should follow TRS' data and project governance processes by reviewing and analyzing existing information channels. Annual surveys are conducted to gauge the levels of member and Reporting Employer satisfaction with TRS services. Department Spotlight: The Enterprise Program Management (EPM) team is dedicated to making TRS a more intentional and resilient enterprise through collaboration and partnership with internal and external stakeholders to make them more productive and successful. This mighty team of four provide services that include - TRS data and project governance, project and program management, as well as research and analysis for operational efforts. Two projects they are currently managing are a website redesign and the 1TRS move to new headquarters. Department Spotlight: The Facilities Management team at TRS is so much more than your typical facilities department. Facilities Management works seamlessly to create a better workspace for our employees and a welcoming space for our TRS members. This past year has been a testament to their hard work, dedication, and the spirit of teamwork as we began our move to new headquarters. Under leadership of Director Eric Koog, Facilities Operations Supervisor Jeff Winnie, and Property Administration Supervisor Pat Koenig, and their team, John Velarde, Agustin Wong, Carlos Maldonado, Mike Walters, Paul Rincon, and Anthony Clemons, Balvina De Arteaga and Estefani Arteaga-Franco, they have achieved remarkable milestones. Both teams have been at the forefront of improving the TRS environment - from new bathroom upgrades to enhanced employee breakroom amenities, window shade enhancements, electrical upgrades, as well as ensuring that common areas and conference rooms are always spotless across our locations. Department Spotlight: The Facilities Management department at TRS is composed of two teams and approximately eleven employees. They are a widely diverse group of technical staff members ranging from 5 to 35 years of experience and are instrumental in fulfilling the Facilities Management core mission by providing solutions to ensure a safe and comfortable physical space for visiting TRS members and staff. Their work can be demanding – they have completed 1,480 service requests year to date for 2024. Stay tuned in the coming weeks as we share more information on Facilities Management!
