Integrating STEM ed with civic innovation, we champion youth to disrupt society for the better with data, design, & tech
About us
To solve the world’s most pressing issues, we need to empower those closest to inequity to be drivers of responsible innovation. trubel&co is a culturally-responsive technical education platform that champions diverse youth to disrupt society for the better. By integrating STEM education with civic innovation, trubel&co creates a pipeline of change makers committed to improving their community using equitable data analytics, responsible technology, and inclusive design. In our approach to democratizing access to technical education, trubel&co grounds career technical education and experiential learning with liberatory design and abolitionist frameworks, empowering youth to build STEM skillsets as a means of tackling community-based challenges and designing ideal futures. Our curricula center identity and place while mobilizing students as agents of change within society, resulting in trubel&co diversifying STEM, building critical consciousness, and instilling self-efficacy. Our services fall under three core pillars: Instruction, Service-Learning, and Exposure. 📚 Instruction: Our flagship program, Mapping Justice, teaches students how to design geospatial tools for social change. Students learn GIS, explore the intersection of Race, Power, and Technology, and create digital apps tackling community issues. 🧑🏾💻 Service-Learning: We mobilize students to directly apply their skills in the field while fulfilling the technical deficit within social impact organizations. We are co-designing Resilient Civic Futures, a deconstructed hackathon for college and graduate students to apply geospatial learnings to advance environmental justice. 🔍 Exposure: To advance our pedagogy on culturally-responsive technical education, we offer opportunities to engage with students and instructors. This may take the shape of student workshops, professional development, conference talks, or more!

🚨 Did you know that fewer than half of high school students report learning the civic skills needed to create positive change in their communities? 🚨 According to the latest YouthTruth report on Youth Civic Empowerment, there is a clear gap between young people’s desire to improve society and the skills they are provided. Here are 3 powerful findings: 1️⃣ Only 44% of high schoolers believe they can make a difference in their school, community, or the world. 2️⃣ Fewer than 38% have worked with others to solve problems in their communities. 3️⃣ While most high school students want to help others, many don’t feel empowered to act on these ambitions. At trubel&co, we’re working to close this gap! Through programs like Mapping Justice and EcoGIS, we empower youth from underrepresented communities with the skills in technology, data science, and civic innovation needed to create lasting change. By bridging STEM education with liberatory design, we’re cultivating the next generation of leaders to drive social and environmental transformation. Join us in inspiring the next generation of changemakers and building a more just and sustainable future. 💡 #CivicEngagement #YouthEmpowerment #STEM4Justice

Hey fam, real talk: do people still do book clubs? 📚 Or better question: how do you feel about civic discourse about radical tech and climate futures with strangers (or actually, future friends)? 👀 Over the summer, trubel&co started an internal book club. As we develop curricula, engage nonprofits, and share our vision for #liberatoryinnovation, we wanted to not only be on top of the latest and greatest ideas, but we were hungry for a protected space to work out our own visions for justice amidst this digitally-enabled and environmentally-wrangled world. (Shoutout to Ruha Benjamin's Imagination and Kate Crawford's Atlas of AI for sparking some amazing discussions). My current obsession is Ayana Elizabeth Johnson's What If We Get It Right (thanks Arpan for grabbing me a copy at #ClimateWeekNYC). I'm only a third through it, but I'm quite literally telling everyone about it (hello world!). As I'm reading it, I'm back to my typical search to find others also interested in radical imagination about reshaping society for the better who want to question, dream, and build. But I'm curious, are others interested in chatting virtually with strangers about these topics? The first ingredient for #goodtrubel is community, so I figured I'd share this idea I came up with on my morning walk and see if anyone bites. See link --> https://lnkd.in/etZAqy6c Welcome to Superscript, a quick pilot of what a liberatory book club might look like, setting a digital space to chat all things tech, climate, and innovation through a lens of justice, liberation, and community. I hope it's an invitation to dream big, push systems, and find solidarity as we (as Ayana put it), "orient a moral compass in a decaying world." Interested? Fill out the form and I'll keep you in the loop on the first gathering. Feel free to comment and reshare if you (or your community) might be down. Some of the questions I'd love to explore through Superscript: ✊🏾 How can abolitionist principles reframe our understanding of tech-justice? 🌱 What does a regenerative economy look like? 💻 How do we build tech that dismantles oppressive structures instead of reinforcing them? 🛠️ What role does digital innovation play in advancing reparative justice? 💡 How might speculative fiction enable climate action in frontline communities? 💫 What role do local economies play in building a post-capitalist future? Maybe I'm posting to the void. Maybe it'll just be my friends from our group chat doing what we already wanted to do. But Ayana has me thinking about possibility, and what if we get it right? Shoutout to Tripp Twyman for sending me the perfect #MooDeng meme to help cleanse the timeline ✨

One of our first trubelmakers, out in the field! ☀️ We're always so proud of Daniela Andrade for the ways she has continued to explore how to promote equity and justice in tech and innovation. Check out her work with MAMAMUSE as she works to close the gender gap in entrepreneurship!
Harvard Student Bridging the Gap Between Female Students and Entrepreneurship | Co-Founder of WWV Labs | Co-President of Harvard Undergraduate Women in Entrepreneurship
I am so grateful for the opportunity to have been invited to attend the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Equity 2030 Alliance event @ UNGPA79 as a member of the alliance representing MAMAMUSE. A year ago, United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) launched the Equity2030Alliance — aiming to closing gender equity gaps in science, technology, and financing. This global alliance represents a collective commitment to advancing gender equity by design. The Equity 2030 Alliance now has 68 members, 14 champions, and 18 experts—and it continues to grow! I am incredibly grateful to be part of such a powerful alliance that offers the support and accountability needed to help close the gender gap in entrepreneurship. Key results shared by the UNFPA include: - 102 ongoing actions - $384 million USD invested in gender-equitable, women-centric initiatives - 64+ million women and girls impacted directly or indirectly by the actions of the members 2022-2023 highlights: - $2.9 billion USD invested by the UNFPA across 150+ countries - 31.2 million unintended pregnancies prevented - 9.5 million unsafe abortions avoided The most powerful part of the event was hearing the stories behind these numbers: - Pamela Coke-Hamilton, Executive Director, International Trade Centre) highlighted the SheTrades initiative, which has transformed the economic lives of 3 million women in 30 countries by connecting them to markets, generating $80 million in new business. - Deemah AlYahya, Secretary-General, Digital Cooperation Organization (DCO)) shared the story of a Saudi woman who scaled her rose business globally by learning digital ecommerce -skills through the Digital Cooperation Organization programming - Farid Fezoua (Global Director, IFC - International Finance Corporation) discussed She Wins Africa, a program supporting female entrepreneurs in sub-Saharan Africa through training, mentorship, and networking. It was incredibly inspiring to hear all the amazing work the Equity Alliance members are doing globally. It only strengthens my conviction and commitment to the goal of closing the gender gap in entrepreneurship! I’m excited to continue following all this incredible progress! Excited to be in back in New York next week for the confluence of MIT Solve and #ClimateWeekNYC! Random fact: I almost didn't apply to Solve. The application was due at the tail-end of a back-to-back travel season and I was intimidated by the maturity of past winners -- but I cobbled an application together and MIT Solve + General Motors saw potential in what we were building. Excited to grace the mainstage during the Closing Plenary on Monday, 9/23 to share our vision on creating better stories, better tech, and a better world. Then, super excited to jam for an in-person workshop on Tuesday 9/24 with Earth Hacks for an introduction to geospatial justice, exploring how to use tech and data for environmental action. I wrote trubel&'cos first business plan from a cafe in Crown Heights, so I can't wait to #sparkgoodtrubel in Brooklyn (see y'all at the Greenpoint Brooklyn Public Library from 4-6pm). No prior technical skills necessary, but please BYO computer or library card!). Some topics that are percolating... 🏡 What are the places we call home? 🗺️ How might we decolonize map authority? 🖥️ Which dashboards can help address environmental justice? 🥯 Where can I find the best bodega in Brooklyn?! After the workshop, we’ll be hosting a mixer (6-7PM) for our participants and all interested in environmental justice + tech to connect and share ideas on building a sustainable future. RSVP* and find out more: https://lnkd.in/ecEvkAU6 CC: Arpan Somani Sanjana Paul Camille Minns *Official RSVPs are limited for our youth participants, so please send me a message if you'd like to attend the workshop or mixer!
