A media company and digital agency led by youth.
About us
True Star is a media company and digital agency led by youth. True Star youth are journalists, reporters, creatives, videographers, marketers, and brand strategists, who work alongside industry professionals. True Star provides its clients with unparalleled access to the culture creators and origins of new trends. True Star empowers youth by amplifying their voice, and making them the engine that drives its business. Since its formation, True Star has provided on-the-job training to over 10,000 youth ages 14-24 living primarily in underserved communities on the south and west sides of Chicago. True Star instructors are media and business industry professionals who work closely with participating youth teaching skills that are transferable to academics and the workplace. True Star is addressing a challenge that many small businesses face, the lack of digital content, digital marketing or even a digital presence online. True Star connects the knowledge capital of its advanced youth with the needs of small businesses, marketers and other non profits, its ultimate goal being to improve business and life outcomes for those in underserved communities. True Star is addressing the inequalities in digital learning, where affluent youth are likely to be content creators and disadvantaged youth content consumers. There has always been thought that digital media and access to it would create more meritocracy, however the digital disruption of media is exceedingly lacking in diversity. True Star is attempting to build leaders, content creators, and innovators, creating a more diverse and inclusive space, which is critical to our society and democracy.

Last night, I had the privilege of participating in the Harvard University University Black Affinity Graduation, a significant milestone in our shared journey. It was a heartwarming reunion at Harvard University with my lifelong friend and colleague, Afua Asantewaa Asantewaa. Our journey began in high school, where we were part of the vibrant True Star Media magazine's after-school program. At TrueStar, we were blessed with the opportunity to interview influential figures like Kanye West, Derrick Rose, and Jasmine Sullivan. We were mentored by the incredible DeAnna Sherman Sherman, learned the art of writing and pitching editorials from legends like Scoop Jackson and honed our sales skills under the guidance of Quinn Riley. This transformative experience ignited our passions and shaped our aspirations. Afua and I took classes together at the @Harvard Kennedy School. I want to express my deepest gratitude to Afua for being a constant source of support and inspiration, reminding me every day that the talents we seek are already within us. And to TrueStar, I am truly thankful for your belief in us and for fostering our growth in that summer program at King High School. Your investment in our potential has paid off in ways we could have never imagined. As Afua and I walked across the Harvard stage together, it was a testament to the power of mentorship, perseverance, and the belief that our dreams are within reach. The TrueStar community, through its existence, has proven that anything is possible with the proper guidance and determination. Thank you! #Truestarmedia #ChicagoPublicSchools #TruestarAlums #HarvardAlumni #AfterSchoolMatters #HarvardBlackAlumniSociety #HBAS #gratitude

This is where it all started, September 2004. Our founders DeAnna and Na-Tae' applied for funding from After School Matters and did our first program at Rainbow Beach park with 17 students who produced a 4-page newsletter. DeAnna was the first instructor, the goal was simple, to improve students writing skills and help them find their voice. Students came up with the name True Star and a long acronym. 😂 Youth interviewed Tamron Hall and #Common. Aiesha Powell from Ebony/Jet came to speak, as well as journalist Shawna N. Prince. Its hard to believe that was 20 years ago! Join us on May 9th as we celebrate 20 years of True Star providing opportunities for nearly 20,000 students. Tickets & Info 👉 https://lnkd.in/gKhi_Erf
