Potential Energy Savings Using Direct Drive Permanent Magnet Servo Motors Motors have been around for many years and are a major usage of the energy from the power grid. Over history the generation of power has been fairly cheap and abundant so that the efficiency of motors was not a major issue. In the late years the cost of energy has been increasing due to rises in the cost of petroleum products that are used to make a large portion of the electricity used. Also people have started to realize that the amount of natural resources needed to produce energy is decreasing. These two factors along with several political factors have brought about a requirement that the production and usage of energy become more efficient. This movement to generate more efficient energy and to use power more efficiently has been called a green movement. This paper will discuss the efficiency improvements of permanent magnet servo motors to replace AC motors in servo applications and the energy savings that can be achieved by designing motors to meet applications and eliminating geared servo motor systems by using direct drive motors. The Effects of Airgap Flux Density on Permanent Magnet Brushless Servo Motor Design This presentation will discuss the effects of changing the Flux density in the airgap of a Permanent magnet Brushless Permanent Magnet Servo motor on the overall motor performance. The air gap flux density is the major parameter that a motor designer will base a motor design on. This presentation will show that the motor magnetic circuit designs can be modified to allow maximum motor performance with lower energy grade magnetic materials than the present high energy rare earth magnets. The higher energy rare earth magnets used have always had a higher cost but now that some of the rare earth components have become harder to source, the need to use mid range energy magnet materials could become necessary. This has started a trend to mix the various magnet materials which can change the magnet performance to values that were not available in the past as single magnet materials. The airgap flux density in this presentation will be varied from 3 KG to 9 KG and the effects of this variation of the airgap flux density on permanent magnet motor designs will be shown. The Design of an In-Hub Permanent Magnet Brushless Motor for a Four-Wheel Transport Cart This presentation will discuss a case study comparing the design of an in-hub permanent magnet motor in a mobility cart used to move supplies from one location to another. This case study will compare using both an inner rotation and outer rotation permanent magnet brushless motors that are mounted inside a wheel that has an 8 inch maximum diameter. This cart will be a four-wheel cart with the motors in each wheel. The maximum load of the cart will be 1000 pounds and the maximum climb angle will be 5 degrees. The cart will have a maximum speed of 5 MPH. The motors will need to accelerate up to the 5 mph in less than a 5 second acceleration time. This case study will compare the magnet materials used in the designs and compare the construction differences of the two designs keeping the iron flux densities at 14 KG and varying the iron thicknesses as the airgap flux densities change. The three motors in this case study will be an inner rotation brushless motor using sintered Neodymium magnets and two outer rotation motors using bonded Neodymium magnets and Ferrite magnets. Permanent Magnet Brushless Servo Motors for Agricultural Applications Electric motors have had use in agriculture type applications for many years. These applications have tended to be belt driven types with electric motors capable of only one speed. Any change in speed required needed to have the gear ratio changed. This has required other methods of controlling the output of the equipment using electrical motors. This added equipment has been baffles in air movement applications, valves in fluid applications and other devices to limit the system output. These added devices cause a large decrease in the efficiency of the system. There are two methods of achieving this speed control. One would be to simply change AC motor to a motor with speed control. A better method is to use a direct dive coupling between the motor and load. The major improvement of this type of a direct drive system is that the motor can be used as a direct drive between the motor and load which will eliminate the gearing system and load decreasing systems needed in the AC motor systems. This system will also be more reliable since the direct drive will eliminate belt wear and replacement. Many of these loads are of a high inertia type and are better matched to a motor with a high inertia. This paper will discuss the use of outer rotation direct drive permanent magnet motors in agriculture type applications.
